Happy Christmas to all y'all!

Every year, my wife does hand-painted Christmas cards, and I write a poem to go in them.

I give you last year's poem, spoilered so as not to inflict it on the unwilling.

Spoiler: A poem

we walk into the clouds our breath makes
while chimneys smoke above our heads
and underneath our feet spring waits

the ice around the gutters thaws and breaks
and mocks our hopes by freezing up again
so we walk between the clouds our breath makes

shadows on the snow form ghostly shapes
and autumn's leaves break through in orange and red
but underneath our feet the spring awaits

fog and sunshine leave a murky wake
between the lands of living and dead
as we walk into the clouds our breath makes

melting snowdrifts free the garden gate
so we can walk among the flowerbeds
and underneath our feet spring waits

summer lies dormant beneath the frozen lake
but winter's grip upon us soon will end
we walk among the clouds our breath makes
while deep beneath our feet spring starts to wake
