Meta-game reason to NOT get spellcasting prodigy?

That feat doesn't work for me.

Who doesn't want to play a prodigy ?

What's wrong with simulating that you are a magical prodigy but rolling an 18 for intelligence or paying through the nose to point-buy an 18 in intelligence ?

Well,
Not to rock the boat but we have never had a spell caster chose SCP. Why ?
Well ok you get +2 on a stat, a free spell which is nice.but its hardly game breaking.
Most of our mages are a bit too preoccupied with their 6 hp and frankly rubbish saves (except will o/c).
Great fortitude, and lightning reflexes are popular, toughness at a pinch. the other misc feats like dodge, inproved initiative. Our mages were always too preoccupied with staying alive to get too excited by +1 on a DC

What's wrong with having a feat limited by the DM to simulate something extraordinary? I like story feats. Everyone can buy up or roll an 18 intelligence, and with stat bonuses they can buy an 18 as well.

Spellcasting Prodigy truly sets you away from other casters. That is why a DM should have some kind of expectation such as writing up an extraordinary background when allowing someone to take this feat. They should only allow one or two casters ever to have it in their campaign world.

Not all feats should be balanced according to common play. I for one hope they include more story feats in future product that are above and beyond other feats, but have roleplaying requirements.

Hi. First, thanks for fending off reapersaurus for me. I really did not understand his reponse and didn't bother to get into it. Besides, he asked me to save him from the discussion, so I did.

I just wanted to add I like the background story "requirement" for this feat. Although my DM didn't ask for it, when my current PC took the feat, I wrote a 13 page (!) background for him. That kind of roleplaying commitment should be rewarded in some way, I think. ;)

Oh, cry me a friggin' river.

I don't see fighter-types getting a "Combat Prodigy" feat that grants them +1 BAB and +2 to hit, or something atrociously overpowered and ridiculous NOT to get like that.

AU has "Natural Archer" and "Natural Swordsman," which give a bonus with those weapons .

Toughness !?

You are not playing past 5th level or something like that, hmmm? Hehe. :p

Bye
Thanee
Thanee... Toughness is a bad choice, but I do know some guys in low level campaigns who took it after their third d4 hitpoints char bit the dust. Some levels behind the group average, survival even got harder.

Sure, some players prefer to plan their chars to level20 when they start, but some of these well planned blueprints don't survive.

As it should be. :D

True, but that's more a feat-based specialization (Weapon Focus, anyone?) rather than a straight and generally-applicable powerup like SCP. Reaper's analogy of a BAB improvement is a good one.

SCP is far from being unbalancing, 1 extra 1st level spell at 1st level, and a DC of 1 higher. It's nice, but it is not a gamebreaker. There is no reason for WotC to change it.
