Meta-magic PrC

Oni

First Post
This is something I squeezed out in just a short time its a first draft, just looking for ideas to make it workable. Thanks!

Spell shaper.

worst PrC BAB progression
worst PrC fort and reflex saves
good PrC will save

+1 casterlevel all they way up.

Prereqs.
Feats - Three meta-magic
Skills - Knowledge: Arcana 8 ranks
Spells - must be able to cast 3rd level spells

1. Meta-magic Specialization, Meta-magic feat
2. Instant meta-magic 1/day
3. Meta-magic feat
4. Improved meta magic.
5. Instant meta-magic 2/day
6. Meta-magic feat
7.
8. Instand meta-magic 3/day
9. Meta-magic feat
10. Meta Mastery

Meta-magic Specialization: The spellshaper devotes his studies to the the secrets of spell manipulation and gives up the the study of two schools of magic. He may no longer gain spells in these two schools of magic, however any spells he already knows from these schools he may continue to cast.

Meta-magic feat: The spellshaper gains a new meta-magic feat at first and third level and then once every three levels thereafter.

Instand Metamagic: The spellshaper can use a single metamagic effect on any metamagic feat he knows on a spell without prepareing it beforehand (if a wizard) or increasing its casting time (is a sorcerer or bard) Th wizard's prepared spell works as if prepared with the metamagic feat except it uses the same spell slot. A socerer or bards spell is cast withouth the adjustment to the casting time but works as if casts with the meta magic feat. \

Meta-mastery: The spellshaper has masted metamagic to such an extent that whenever she uses a metamagic feat the feats level increases upon a spell is reduced by one (this can't reduce an increase to less than one level, or less than zero levels if the increase is already +0).

First, you forgot HD, skill points, and class skills.

Second, Instant metamagic really seems to favor the wizard. The wizard doesn't add the level to the spell? That's very powerful. A quickened fireball at no extra cost, even once a day is huge. THe full round casting of the sorcerer is only a minor inconvince most of the time. I think you need to even this up some.

Meta-mastery should reduce the cost to +1 at the lowest. Otherwish you can cast still, silent, extended spells at no level adjustment. Actually, you can apply extended mutliple times on top of that.

Another idea is to make the character pick a Metamagic feat to master... Much like Skill Focus, or Weapon Focus... Then, you could give them the ability multiple times.

Meta-focus: Pick one Metamagic feat. The level adjustment for that Metamagic feat is reduced by 1. Pick a different Metamagic feat everytime you gain this ability.

I don't like giving up two schools of magic. Not all schools are equal. I'd suggest make them give up schools as if they had pecialized in transmutation or evocation. So giving up evocation alone is enough, but divination+necromancy dosn't cut it.

Also, it is better in every way than the wizard, so there is almost no reason not to be a meta-master. How's this for a restriction for the meta-master. They do not lose schools of magic. Instead they may only use their highest-level spell slots for spells that have been meta-magiced at least +1 level. That emphasizes the differences between this and the normal wizard.

I like happiest_sadist's idea about their highest level spells...

I also think instant metamagic is too much. How about if it allows you to use only a +0 or +1 level metamagic ability? And increases in power level as you go up by a +1 level adjustment per three or four levels or something?

Also, what's improved metamagic?

Why not just use the incantatrix? (I'm sure that's misspelled, but you know the PrC from Magic of Faerun which is very similar to the one proposed here :))

I say make them give up necromancy only, this class seems more suited for the evoker anyways. Also, I believe that Jack's meta-focu should be a meta-magic feat. Then again no listens to me anyways, unless I screw up that is.
