Metamagic Spells

Several metamagic feats state "You can alter a spell that deals damage to foes..."

Does something like Spiritual Weapon count for this? It is a conjuration, but the conjured weapon deals damage. And how about a spell that causes ability damage?

I believe the intent is that the spell itself needs to cause actual damage...like inflict wounds or magic missile...

If so, could you Maximize a Summon Monster spell to get maximum hps on the creature? I don't think so for either case, but I can support it

No books on me, but isn't the hammer considered a spell? If it can be attacked and destroyed, then it is an object and not subject. If it is considered a spell, then I would say it should work. The summons would not, as it is the summoned creature that deals damage.
