Harald was always intrested by the city guardsmen. When Harald was a young boy, the thing he liked to do most was watching the numerous city guards partolling the city in their shining armor. Whenever there was a parade, you could be sure the boy Harald was somewhere in the crowd of spectators watching the men and women that protect the city march by. To him, there was no greater thing to do than to serve the city guards spending your lives protecting the lives of innocent people by walking around in your polished armor through the city.
Years later he found himself walking one such armor, placing his own life on the line, saving those of others. He liked his work, trying to keep the world a better place, as much as to call it devotion. Some priests of Corean took note of this, and decided to call him in. They offered him to teach him new methods and skills which would assist him in bringing good. Harald eagerly accepted, and so he was trained in the arts of a paladin, by one of the elder warriors of the church, listening to the name Malcolm.
Harald was happy with his newfound powers, applying them whenever he could. This only made him more devoted to his work at patrolling the city, though now he made sure to spend at least some time every day at the temple. At the temple, he became aquiainted with a charming priestess called Penelope. The relationship between Harald and Penelope grew and soon Penelope was living in with Harald. It didn't take much time for business to escalate into marriage and then pregnancy. Harald was still happily patrolling the streets. Life was good ...
... until one day when he came home, he found out the door wasn't locked. Getting a little worried, he entered the house and found a bloodtrail on the ground leading towards the bedroom. Fearing the worst, he walked into the room and immediately felt his stomach twisting around. His wife Penelope lay naked on her back, each limb tied to one corner of the bed, her throat slit. The blood that had dripped down from the numerous wounds on her body coloring the bed in a crimson red gave the whole view a very sinister look. Angry at the situation, Harald lifted up a chair, yelled out, and threw the chair against a wall, wherefter it fell down in pieces. After raging on a little longer and destroying some more furniture, Harald sat down in a corner and cried.
A few hours later, Harald was talking to Malcolm, asking him to do his best on finding Penelope's killer. Malcolm told him that, although revenge is not what he should be thinking off, they would do his best to get whoever did this. In the meanwhile, Harald should try and keep his life in order and continue his work at the city guards. Though he would probably never forget this, some day he'll have other things to set his mind on again. The words sounded pretty hollow to Harald, but could see the reasoning of it. He didn't enjoy patrolling the city anymore though. His mind started thinking, if he wasn't out that day watching the lifes of others, but at home, watching his wife, she would still be alive by now, as would be their unborn child.
Harald started to show up in the barracks less and less. His Captain was aware of that, but knew about his wife's death so permitted it for now, hoping he would turn by later. Harald kept inquiring Malcolm about the investigation, who in turn had to keep disappointing him. Harald started to get frustrated and attained less and less to his duties, as well as his appointments at the temple. Except for the bedroom and the floor in the hallway, he hadn't even bothered cleaning up a single time after his wife's departure. Neither did he spend much time on hygiene and cooking, eating his meat and vegetables raw. Harald began to avoid people and people began to avoid Harald.
One day Malcolm already hadn't heard of Harald for a full week and decided to bring him a visit. When he arrived, he was disgusted by the state he found the house in. When he found Harald, he was even more surprised. Harald lay shaking on the bed, struck by fever. He told Harald to come with him to the temple, where they could help him. Harald replied harsly, accusing Malcolm for ignoring the case against Penelope. Malcolm told him there were more important matters now and that he should come to the temple immediately, after which he started helping him out of bed. Harald yelled, grabbed his sword and cleaved the arm that held him of Malcolms body. Malcolm looked astonished to his own hand lying on the ground and then to Harald, who appearantly wasn't satisfied yet and continued attacking Malcolm. A few seconds later Malcolm was a bleeding corpse, laying on the ground. After realizing what he just did, Malcolm fled his house in panic, taking his most important belongings with him, thinking he wouldn't come back there.
For a few days, he lived his life in alleys and sewers, resorting to theft to get his breakfast together, until he was found by a man who named himself Torlan. Torlan told Harald he recognized him, and that he could give him his old powers back, if he was just to perform one task for them. Harald, who indeed noted that Corean no longer granted him powers was intrigued by the proposal and agreed. Torlan took him along to a house with a big room that was covered with religious drawings. A faint whisper in the back of Haralds mind noted that these drawings don't at all like the ones belonging to Corean, but Harald was by now too eager to get his powers back to really care. Torlan told Harald to stay put in the middle of the room, and assisted by several robed characters, started to perform a ritual centered on Harald. Though the ritual confirmed his thoughts earlier, Harald didn't care enough anymore and let them do.
After the ritual he noted he had divine powers once more, even though they were completely different from before. Harald was content enough though. Torlans words brought him back to reality. He was ordered to strip off his armor and symbol. They would be replaced with items more fitting to his new situation. The armor, bearing the symbols of the god he served could one day prove to be usefull in an espionage attempt, but for Harald other equipment was more suited. After the equipment switch, Torlan gave him a symbol of the deity that now accepted him, Vangal. Harald thought for a while, looked at Torlan and then with a "What the heck" he put the symbol around his neck. Torlan grinned before narrating "Okay, since I did my part of the deal, here's what I want you to do for me..."
