well actually i simply (in my state of shock and dread) could not find it within the text of the spell.

so here is the character and the circumstances of his death. his name is Sir Nathaniel Birch, a human paladin/ranger peasant who gained knighthood through incredible luck and deeds. basically he stopped an attempt to usurp the king's throne singlehandedly. then he negotiated a deal with a rogue knight who had been plaging the country with bandit attacks gaining his aid in rescuing the kidnapped princess in the process. the king died with no siutable heir, nathaniel found the next king and reunited that man with his son. so nathaniel was named high protector of the kingdom despite his low birth and granted knighthood.

through all of this nate had been plagued by some kind of body jumping demon. the demon could only be killed by trapping it inside the body of a certian type of person. the only siutable person nate knew of was his best friend, the local halfwit of his villiage. nate lost his paladinhood when he tried to kill his best (and at the time only) friend thinking the demon was inside him when it was not.

punishing himself for his transgressions, nate refused at that time to undertake a quest of attonement not thinking himself worthy. it was at this time he negotiated the settlement with the rogue (not the class) knight. there was a large battle (1200 troops counting both sides) that nate and the party were involved in after nathaniel snuck invisibly into the iorcish camp and freed the princess. in the aftermath of the battle, he confronted the leader of the orcish forces: a thousand year old half orc known as the green knight. it took only 6 seconds for the half orc to cut nathaniel down, itwas the most one sided battle i have ever seen. i charge attack, miss. she takes a full attack action, doing 60+ pts of damage, killing nate.

earlier in his career, nate had saved the life of a barbarian who became his right hand man later, the barbarian made off with the national hero's body after fighting another of Nate's friends, the leader of the kingdom's forces at this particular battle. one year later, the body and enough money/goods to pay for a true ressurection were dropped off in nathaniel's home town and the corpse had not decomposed at all. it's verry low magic world, churches normally refuse ressurection requests, because they are not capable of doing them. the dm made an exception this time.

more bandit hunting and combat insued. the characters began building an army to combat their new enemy the green knight. during this process, word reached their new settlement that the green knight had attacked and killed most of the forces of the rogue knight that the armistice had been worked out with earlier. the party went to check it out and after having little difficulty freeing some of the captives, were taken prisoner themselves.

their captor killed nate, swearing to make sure that he would stay dead this time shortly before the party was rescued and the green knights forces were again routed. this time another knight decided that it was his fault that nate had been killed and undertook a quest to bring him back (his quest for attomement as he had recently broken an oath, he was a paladin of the god of honor and duty)

now, the part you have all been waiting for, what happened to nate: he came back as a brown bear. thus nullifying most of his feats (weapon focus ect...) and making the character somewhat overpowered in our campaign (str 30, dex 18, con 18 int 16, wis 14, cha 16) so he is taking some much needed time off to re-evaluate his life while the party catches up.

edit= forgot to list the race.
