Midnight - the dead

First Post
I'm currently beginning a Midnight campaign, and another thread on EN World made me think of a question.

Typically, in D&D, it's been explained that there is a time limit on how long clerics can use Raise Dead etc. on a body, because after that time limit, the spirit has reached its final reward, become a petitioner, integrated with the plane, or whatever.

In a world like Midnight, or Dragonlance during the Age of Mortals, before the War of Souls, the spirits of the dead never leave. In each case, they aren't able to reach their final rest, as they're trapped on the world.

Would it be a logical extension of that thought, that as a result, Raise Dead etc. could bring characters back after a much longer time in these worlds? In Midnight Reincarnate would be the only choice for characters who are not Legates, but in any case...

Banshee,

I suppose you could certainly reincarnate a number of the dead in Midnight, especially those that aren't Fell. But I'd probably have something go wrong too since they also are trying hard to not come back...usually.

Channelers cannot cast raise dead, res, or true res. You only have access to those spells if you play a Legate of Izrador.

Why are they trying hard not to come back? (I'm just getting familiar with the Midnight setting.)

Why would you want to come back to a world full of misery and suffering?

That was pretty much my idea too. I mean while being dead sucks and having no where to go, being back among the living and the oppressive nature of the Shadow/Izador in your midst...that tends to do some pretty nasty things too.

Bel,
I think he was more exploring the possibility of say a weapon from before the Shadow's fall being able to have that effect.

Banshee, this kind of question qould surely sprak the interest of the AtS community, where Midnight is debated to its backside. ;)

First thing is that they released an updated 2nd edition channeler spell list with notes on spells that work differently in Midnight, among them is Reincarnate, there is a 50% chance of coming back as an animal and 50% of being humanoid, among those are the common races of the world and then there is 10% chance of something different, I would say this is a really good change and advise you to take a look at the updated channeler spell list.

Since you are asking this i take you do not have the 2nd edition, among the new material in the book they present the idea that alls ouls come and return to the world, they are part of the eternal, which is both a mass of spirits and the spirit of the world.

So it comes down to the souls returning somewhere, not just th eusual D&D cosmology of them going some other plane, much closer to FF7 and its lifestream too. If you prefer the other route, I would say after the 100 years even the most powerful of mortal's magic cannot help, the souls have gone too mad, already got a new body and thus restarted in the cycle of life or just do not are willing to come back anymore.

I ahven't been much to EnWorld lately, so I must have missed a couple of threads on Midnight... at least I got to yous hehehe. ;)

Hmmm.

That could be an interesting way to implement the Midnight campaign I've always wanted to run. I've been itching to run one that was episodic in nature, with mini-campaigns seperated by generations, where the new characters would play in a world changed by their ancestors. It's a way of working in the possibility of an 'ultimate win' for the good side without debasing the core concept of Midnight.

But if instead of new characters, it was the old characters raised from the dead after decades of oblivion... Some interesting possibilities there.

You *can* reincarnate as a Chenneler, however. I'd think it would be awful tempting for Chennelers to be bringing back all those lvl 15+ heroes who have died over the years, to make some sort of army of champions..
