Mind Flayer Trilogy 3e?

Use monster advancement rules to get them all within a certain level range?
Not allowed, by Wizard's own rules. You either use the flat 3.5e creature stats, or you do a direct conversion from the original source.

In some cases, that makes for nonsensical adventures, but your hands are tied by those rules.

Thanks for the warning Boz. Removed.

Kesh, whatever happened to just writing unoffical conversions? Did Wizards say 'You can't make a homebrew campaign and put details on the internet'? I certainly hope not.... :\

Edit - as a side note, I don't seem to be *able* to use PMs, as I apparently don't have sufficent privledges.

That's pretty much what happened.

Also note that, while no one here has mentioned it, you are also expressly forbidden from using any of the "fluff" text.

As a result, the "conversion" will consist of just stats. Monster stats, stats for traps, and so forth. (WOTC wants to encourage people to buy the ESDs from svgames.com and rpgnow.com. But even if the adventure in question hasn't been scanned yet--which is true in several cases--you still can't give out the "fluff" text...)

What if you have the original adventures? Wouldn't fluff text not matter then?

And have I mentioned that I think that is quite possibly the most abitrary and moronic rule I've ever heard?

Fluff text has nothing to do with it. You couldn't include that in your online conversion anyway, just rules changes / creature stat updates.

The rule itself was pretty good, since it allowed us a legal 'out' for converting old books to 3e, but when they updated their rules it became crippled with this monsters clause.

hmm... if it's bothering you and the FAQ doesn't explain it, i'd recommend you make a post in the Meta forum.

Are the mind flayers in the SRD? Weren't they removed?? Or was it the name illithid that WOTC didn't want people using?

Mike

The whole concept of illithid/mind flayers is considered Product Identity by Wizards (along with beholders and other critters). So no, they're not in the SRD at all.
