Minion Convention Challange

Great idea! I am going to run this at the Gateway convention in September. I ran a similiar event with "Commoners vs. Diablo", but 4e and Gauntlet will be a great combo!

This sounds like tremendous fun. In "Commoners vs. Diablo" each player had zero level PCs and their job was to escape the dungeon with as many commoners as possible. They were the minions!

Here's my initial thoughts on how I will to do Gauntlet 4e...

1) I will probably start them at first level and then when they get through X fights, then hand them 2nd level versions and then 3rd level versions. For a table of 6, that's 18 characters so that's a chunk of work. I would not want to count XP at a con game and I want them to level up three times in 4 hours so I gotta wonder how long fights with minions last.

2) They will be given large encounter areas. When the area is clear of monsters, they get their break to resupply encounter powers. However, whenever they use a staircase, that will count as their 8 hour rest and they will heal all wounds and recover dailies.

3) Instead of focusing on the original Gauntlet's maps, I will go for more Gauntlet on Xbox's concept of flavorful encounter zones. Hmm....gonna have to buy me some dungeon tiles...

4) I will definitely do Generators. I am unsure about how to plan XP per encounter because what percentage will be monsters already on the battle area vs. how often what XP level will be cranked out of the generators?

My slightly more cynical version. I call it D&D: Gauntlet

Up to four PCs walk into a cavern, and a horde of minions run out. As PCs defeat the horde another horde of slightly higher level Minions runs out.

This continues for as long as the PCs can stay alive. Players can insert another quarter to regain HP
Cynical? It's brilliant! Getting players to pay me for more hit points! I love it!

It's hilarious. One poster figures on pointing to the whole "4e is videogamey" and everyone else says, "HELL YEAH!"
Video games have been ripping off D&D for decades, turnabout is fair play.

Say, anyone remember the way the Demon generators looked in gauntlet? I found some passable sprites for the demons, but cant for the life of me remember what spawned them.

8bit comes to life

Must admit, on more than one occassion this weekend while running KoS for my FLGS someone cried out 'Wizard needs life'

Also, fun story, and no hyperbole. I built a conversion of a Wizards module for 4e play using the wonderful pre-release rules on the site. Several new players (to the game) turned up, including a friend's younger sister.

She chose the Wizard.

During a particualry chaotic scene, the grell philosopher cast a magical darkness in the center of square, prior to the grimlocks pouring in.

Without missing a beat, before I had even the chance to call "Initiative" she cries....

wait for it ....

"I cast magic missile at the darkness"

I spit coke half way across the room.

You can call it videogamey if you want... (and yes, this particular scenario is videogamey) we could get into a long drawn out conversation whein people on one side say it's not, people on another say it is, and people like me say sometimes it is sometimes it ain't but who cares... it's lots of fun. :)

But who cares. I think it would be fun. :P

Then here you go. These Were kitbashed with some of the classic gauntlet monsters in mind

Brazier = Demon
Orc Skull = Grunt
Altar = Sorcerer
Demon skull Altar = Super Sorcerer [found out later those did not actually spawn, so it could work for a Demon generator instead]
Secret entrance = Lobbers

EDIT; Here are the Sorcerers, Grunts [2 species] and Lobber stand ins..
