Minorities & D&D/RPGs

i'm a hispanic asian pacific islander

i've gamed with koreans, indians, pakistanis, panamanians, germans, brits, etc...red, yellow, brown, white, pink, black, green from too much beer & pretzels... we are all shades.

in my old OD&D group we had a whole mix of ethnicities... what we didn't have was any gamer girls.

Sounds like the start of a bad joke:

A Pacific Islander, a Korean, an Indian, a Pakistani, a Panamanian, a German, and a Brit are all playing D&D...

I'm an African-American gamer myself, but in the three years I've been playing, I've only met three other black gamers, and roughly the same number of other non-whites. I think partly it might be a cultural thing, partly a socio-economic thing as to why there aren't more minority gamers... at least for the African-American population.

I am an African American gamer as well, and come from a socio-economically disadvantaged situation (translation: I was poor). I have concluded the same thing. I just had the right set of circumstances, I figure.

I'm a white native american myself. :)

Once DMed a game for four blacks. Upper middle class at that. Didn't do that hot a job unfortunately. Out of practice and trying too hard to impress people. Outside of that it's been mostly whites, with the occasional non-white. Including a Han by the name of Goon who's family immigrated from Thailand.

I've known and gamed with a very few gamers of African Ancestry (I don't use A-A, because not everyone was American :)) but mainly it's been with other caucasian males, probably because people tend to hang out in similar groups. Since D&D is a game spread predominantly socially, there aren't as many non-caucasian, non-males who are introduced this way.

It's one reason I like going to Gamedays, and espcially Gencon: Because I get to see a wider spectrum of gamers than I usually do.

Generally I find in the UK it seems to be fairly heavily white males, but in one of the groups I game with we've had a membership including one british indian, one canadian chinese, one scandinavian, male and female hispanics (Puerto Rican) and a few of us white brits. Also had mixed gender in the group pretty much all the way through.

At conventions in London I haven't seen that many minority gamers, which I would tend to expect more here than in the other cities.

Weight or Quantity? Clairification is needed.

I've gamed with several black players, including one in my first group who I thought was a fantastic roleplayer. I also have been in groups where I was one of only 3 males at an 8 man + GM table. Realy, the only ethnicity I've not gamed with has been Indian (From india), and it's not from a lack of trying, just never met one who gamed.

In addition to white (i.e. of European Protestant or Catholic descent) gamers, I have gamed with or know gamers who are:
  • Asian American female of Chinese & Philipino descent
  • Singaporean male of Chinese descent
  • Asian American male of Chinese descent
  • Black British female
  • British male of Greek & European Jewish descent
  • British Jewish male of non-Jewish English and South African Jewish descent

Despite having lived and even gamed in Japan, I've never met a Japanese gamer.

I've been gaming since around 1981, and in that time I've played mostly with white folks.

Of course, I grew up in a pretty monocultural town, but still...

Anyway, I've had native Americans, a single Japanese-American, a single Indian-American, and prolly a few others. But way more girls than minorities. :\

Other than people I've met at game days and conventions, in 25+years of gaming I have played with one chinese-american female, and one hispanic-american male. Of course I grew up in a town in New Hampshire, where for a long time you could count the number of minority families on one hand.
