Minorities & D&D/RPGs

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but does it really matter? This is a hobby about pretending to be someone you're not in the first place.

Also, you really can't base any kind of statistics (for anything) just based on personal experience. If I did, I'd have to assume all Native Americans were gamers.

It is a curiosity that there don't seem to be many non-Caucasian gamers, at least not in my area. Maybe Thotas or Twofalls could contradict me. There aren't any non-whites in my group, and I never see any non-whites at my LGS. But my group does seem to have a slightly larger than average percentage of female gamers.

Curiosity?

Perhaps you should read the definition of "assume".... ;)

I'm probably in that "ultra minority": part Native American (Navajo)/part Hispanic/part white AND female! :)

I've not gamed with anyone other than whites. Dunno why. That's what my group consists of. Rarely have seen any black sci-fi fans, much less gamers at cons. I could probably count on one hand the number of blacks I see at cons....

I've had a substitute manager one time who was an hispanic gamer.

And the Hispanic part is most likely a mix of white and Mexican Indian. Which means your ancestors arrived on this continent at various times. 15,000 or more years ago for the Mexicans, about 8,000 where the Navaho are concerned, and much more recently for your white forebears. And all share a gene complex with people in Central Asia.

(Didn't know that 'bout honkeys and redskins, now did you? :D )

Almost the same here. I've had one black guy in the group for, oh, nine or ten weeks before his work schedule changed and we never heard from him again. I see two or three at the game shop every now and again, but that's it. Seen two Indians there. No Native Americans, no Asians.

Acquana prefers to call American white folks "mutts"

Of course it doesn't "matter," it's just something to discuss and ponder over. I went to a school where whites were a minority, so I pay a little more attention to who's around me out of habit. I know some of my teachers from that school would've had theories as to why blacks are so hard to find in geek hobbies ...

I've kept a slight track of the spectrum I've played with, just to see the differences in people. It really fascinates me.

1 Native American/White dude (we finally managed to convince him to do it was when he was totally smashed)
2 black guys (I got one of them into gaming in high school and played regularly, the other was a senior in college when I met him so he was about to leave)
1 Filipino
1 Latino/Italian
1 Latino

And of course ...

1 Jew
1 son of a former Italian mafia man
1 daughter of an Alabamaian rocket scientist
2 Rednecks

I love diversity in all flavors. :D

To answer your question directly, it doesn't matter. It's just simple curiosity and something to talk about.

That is true.

I've been black for 38 years, and a RPG gamer for 27 of those years. While I do see the occasional black guy or girl at my LGS, I can honestly say I've only gamed with a 2-3 over all those years, usually only for short periods of time.

I'm guessing that the dearth of black players has less to do with socio-economics and more to do with taste in literature. Like most of the gamers I know, I came to gaming because I was interested in epics (the Illiad, Beowulf, The Kalevala, etc.), comics, sci-fi/fantasy novels, and other entertainment forms that explored similar themes- like TV, Movies, and RPGs. RPGs gave me the outlet to act as if I were the hero in my favorite stories.

Most of the people I know who aren't gamers have almost no interest in the above forms of entertainment, and even if they do show an interest, its usually limited to video games.

Its not scientific, but it seems that if you don't read the stories, you probably don't play the RPGs, probably because the hobby, like the legends, involve the manipulation of words and engaging the imagination.

Video Games, TV and Movies simply don't engage the imagination the way the written word does, nor do they engender the patience the RPG hobby requires.
