Minorities & D&D/RPGs

I've gamed with one African American (Hi, Truthseeker!), one Native American and one Asian. Other than that, all the people I've gamed with have been white.

In my time I've gamed with several Latinos, a group of Pacific Islanders, 3 Blacks, about 4 Native Americans, and a handful of Asians; the majority, however, have been white.

Partially this has been due to communities I have lived in (when I lived in a small town in New Hampshire, for example, none of my gaming buddies were non-white, while in the San Francisco Bay Area I have had very diverse groups). Partially it may be a matter of appeal.

Dunno. I'm no sociologist. All I know is that BSP is one of my favourite and most loyal gamers. He's Black, an ex-Marine, an I.T. guy, but, most importantly, a gamer -- who could ask for anything more?

I find it amusing that some people feel the need to defend (for lack of a better word) the responses to the original question.

Until 3 weeks ago, I'd never met a (RPG) gamer who wasn't "white." Me, I'm white as can be, but some people choose to use my physical appearance and birthplace to argue differently.

:)

There is only one minority in my group of gaming buddies. He's 3/4 Pueto Rican and 1/4 white (German); we sometimes say he's Three-Quarter Rican :). I've seen/met gamers of asian and latin american descent but not of any other minorities.

Hokay- lemme 'splain:

I'm one of those "human gumbo" style black guys who hates almost all of the terminology that has come along in my lifetime. My ancestry includes Native American, Puerto Rican, Arabic, German, French, Italian, and Eastern European Jews, just to name a few, so things like "African American" just sound blech to me.

Heck, I'm actually 1/4th Puerto Rican, so I could call myself a "Quarter-Rican." :p
...but then again, THAT particular lineage can be traced back to the Middle East...

So, black for 38 years, black 4-Evah! (Oh yeah...and I'll also accept being called American!)

COOL!

It's an interesting mix to be sure.... :)

I tease a friend of mine who's Irish, German and a couple more I can't remember right now and he doesn't touch a drop of alcohol....

honestly, once you sit down at a table, the only races that matter are in the PHB.

Yeah, but the hobby is yet another hurdle for those of us who are black and "talk white" or "act white" when dealing with our community.

Unfortunately, blacks can be just as racist and judgemental as anyone else. :\

Ignorance knows no color.

Man, I hate labeling myself as African American. I'm black... just not very dark. :) I'm also Irish, Gypsy, some sort of American Indian, and Hungarian as well.

So yeah, I'm a gamer (without a group) and I'm black.
I wasn't poor, but religion played a BIG factor in not being a bigger gamer as a child.

I've never met any other black gamers (Hi Guys/Gals!) :p That might actually have more to do with growing up in nearly completely white area.

That is totally untrue in the USA. If you don't believe me, look up the word racist in a dictionary. It's impossible for an African American, American Indian, Latino, or Asian to be racist (in the USA). :)
