I guess to avoid complications, I'm going to have to define the images as creatures

So, since the spell creates figments, when do the opponents get a roll for disbelief?

If you make them creatures, they would no longer be figments and wouldn't be able to follow the spell's description.

Creatures encountering an illusion usually do not receive saving throws to recognize it as illusory until they study it carefully or interact with it in some fashion.

Some DMs also rule that magic missile doesn't work on images too (it affects creatures not figments or objects). It doesn't make it a reasonable ruling.
