Modifying Magical armor

Quick question...

I was wondering if you could add modifications to magical armor without harming the armor.

For example. say a player has a suit of plus 1 full plate, and he wants to add armored spikes and articulation to it.

Can he do it, and if so, how? Would it require a whole new round of magical item creation to do it, or could he simply pay the extra 50 GP and add the 10 pounds.

That's just an example I'm using.

I don't see why not. You can't turn normal armor into MW armor for obvious reasons, but this is a relativly minor change. If the armor is already MW, you might require the spikes to be as well, and a higher check to add them to magical armor vs mundane.
