Monk/Paladin help...

I have always wanted to play a Monk/Paladin. I always imagined him as a simple person, from a peasent family, who answered his god's call to serve, but once he had accepted the orders of paladinhood became uncomfortable with the "trappings" of the order: swords, armor, war horses etc... Since he was so much better at using his hands and being rough and tumble with his family on the farm, he would spend time with the monks who also served his god and finally ask for a transfer to the monkly order. Now he is a humble warrior traveling the world, righting wrongs and laying the holy smackdown on the evils of the wolrd barehanded. I have also looked at Monk/Cleric builds and Sacred fists PrCs. It can be itneresting.

Bruiser: What character generator is that?

Session 1.... Success?

Well, tonight was our first game. I think this paladin thing is pretty cool. After being a full blooded fighter though, I need to remember: material components are your friend. Also, paladins go good if they have mounts. Fortunately, my DM (aka blood brother basically, very close friend) knew I have a tendancy of forgetting/not realizing the obvious and had a mount for me: dire lion! Woo! Other than the red draggie that almost ate me in half, I held my own quite well. However, it's 8:05am (just got home from gaming) and need sleep, just wanted to rethank and give you guys update how it went :) More to come...

Hehehe.

For anyone who wants to play a Pal/Monk... I suggest to take a look at Grim Tales and build the char with these classes.

Hey Prince I seriously recommend taking a look at the Fist of Raziel PrC from BoED.....it rocks.

You get full spell progression barring 1st lv, additional SMITING, (god I love that ability) and some really funky additions to yer SMITES when you use 'em.

Forgot to mention the permanent magic circle vs evil as a (SU) ability, (no dispelling that baby!!!

PrC.. mmmmm

I think the character is going mighty well thusfar. Thanks for all the help. I think the last thing I have to look for is PrCs. So far the only one I've considered is Fist of Raziel, which basically means bring on the evil. Other suggestions are quite accepted....

Also, DM started a sub/side quest for us. I'm starting a new thread on it. Basically we obtained a castle and have to furnish with junk (eq it if you will), hire our servants/guards/army, and protect it. Not sure where I'm going to start the string yet, but hopefully see some of you there.

After having done some pretty hard thinking about Fist of Raziel, I finally decided Templar was better.

Don't get me wrong, Fist is a very cool class. I obsessed about it for a long time. BUT, I think Templar lets you do some very interesting things.

Here's why:

1. True Believer > Servant of the Heavens. Same feat, better if you're TB.

2. Mettle > Permanent Prot. from Evil.

3. FoR does get more smites, BUT Weapon Specialization is a +2 damage to every swing.

4. Spellcasting level for Templar at Level 20 is 10 (Templar); 3 (Paladin), with two sets of spells (including the lovely extra first level spell slots. Mmmm, Divine Sacrifice). Spellcasting level for Fist is always 9, which loses out on a lot of effects (say, the top level of Golden Barding, etc.).

5. But the real kicker is the feats, including free Weapon Spec. from Templar and the Bonus Fighter Feats from Templar. The extra feats allows a Monk 2 / Pal 6 / Templar 10 / Cavalier 2 Build, which ends up with:

Stunning Fist (Monk)
Combat Reflexes (Monk)
Power Attack (Base)
Weapon Focus: Longsword (Human)
True Believer (3d)
Divine Might (6th)
Mounted Combat (9th)
Weapon Specialization: Longsword (Templar 3d Free)
Ride-by-Attack (Templar Bonus 4th)
Spirited Charge (12th)
Pain Touch (15th)
Weapon: Focus -- Lance (Templar Bonus 8th)
Extra Smiting (18th)

This gets you Deadly Charge, extra smites from Paladin, feats, and Templar, Weapon Specialization in your longsword, and with a Ki Striking longsword and lance, you can stun and nauseate your target on a smiting deadly charge.

*ahem* Yowza.

6. Final thought: the "payoff" power for FoR is pretty cool: Holy on Everything. But that's what the Holy Sword spell does anyway -- and adds a +5 enhancement bonus. And Templars turn out to be better spellcasters.

So, just some thoughts. I'm by no means telling folks not to take Fist of Raziel, it's the first semi-sane Paladin PrC WotC has put out. I'm just pointing out that a closely crafted character can do more with Templar because of the three bonus feats and superior spellcasting.

best,

Carpe

I can't help wondering whether the designer that gave "fist of raziel" a permanent magic circle against evil was thinking it through though. Did he *really* want to give a class ability available at about 7th character level (or whatever) that makes a PC immune to charms, dominations and summoned monsters? It is a hugely powerful benefit and seems wildly out of kilter with any of the DMG prestige classes. I'd shy away from it as a 10th level PrC ability, but as 1st level... miles too good.
