Monkey grip + Power attack ??

Monkey Grip needs to be rewritten for 3.5, I think.

Something like "You can treat a two-handed weapon as a one-handed weapon in all relevant aspects"

No, no, no! Not in 3.5. It's a two-handed weapon, that you're using in one hand.

...except that Monkey Grip isn't in 3.5, so it's a two-handed weapon that you're using in two hands.

3.5 really does clear these things up! :D

No more problems with Persistent Spell either

Not entirely right... 3.5 never changed Persistent Spell, therefore it's still as it used to be.

Basically what we are saying is 3.5 may not be too backwards compatible? (who would have guessed:)

I think that a lot of the new changes were not looked at closely with regard to how they interact with older 3.0 optional material. Can anyone who play tested 3.5 comment on that?

If I understand it right, the general opinion is that if a two-handed sword is monkey gripped in one hand, one point of power attack inflicts two points of damage. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thanks.

Well...

Going over creatures in the MM 3.5 who would use two-handed weapons in one hand - giants and ogres mainly - it would appear that even though they weild them one-handed, they're gaining the 1.5 strength bonus to the weapon damage.

Based on that, looks like I have to change my opinion, people using m0onkey grip to weild a two-handed weapon in one hand would inflict 2 points of damage per 1 point of power attack.

Where do you see that? All of the giants and ogres I look at are using two-handed weapons sized for them (even if it doesn't say "Large greatsword" or whatever, look at the weapon damage -- the weapons are obviously the larger versions) -- which indicates that they are using the weapon with both hands, and are therefore entitled to 1.5 x strength damage.

I personally don't find the rules that confusing. Two hands on the weapon = 2 x PA damage (unless it's a light weapon). The comma before the "or" in the power attack description is what's confusing -- but I read the feat to be based on how the weapon is wielded, not the type of weapon.

So if I allowed Monkey Grip (I don't, but that's another story), you'd only get 1 x Str bonus and 1 x PA with it.

That's my take, anyway.

Actually, I was about to change what I said, as I just noticed they were using the 'huge' variant for damage, but they weren't calling it a 'huge greatsword'. Which I find inconsistant as a frost giant uses a 'huge greatage' and a cloud giant uses a 'gargantuan morning star'.

So, back to my original opinion, monkey grip doesn't allow 2 points per 1.

That's the thing - the comma isn't confusing, it's part of the rule.

When do you get the 2/1 Power Attack special?

a. When using a two-handed weapon.
b. When using a one-handed weapon with two hands.

Ignore Monkey Grip. Look at the Lance. In 3.5, it's a two-handed weapon. Therefore it satisfies condition a.

While mounted, you may use a lance "in one hand". Note that it's still a two-handed weapon... it doesn't say "when mounted, treat a lance as a one-handed weapon". So even though you're using it in one hand, as a two-handed weapon, it's eligible for double PA.

In 3.5, "two-handed weapon" does refer to the type of weapon, not how it is wielded.

Just thought I'd pop by to say these new rules on weapon sizes is a complete set of garbage. They are a prime example on how to make something simple really complex, for no gain whatsoever. Really, really bad. What was so bad about the 3.0 rules????

Complex is really the wrong word. More stupid.
