Monks and Spiked Chain

Of course you are right paulewaug, but the spiked chain is so versatile. Still, with unarmed strike, the lack of ability to strike at 5ft with the other reach weapons is not much of a limitation for a monk.

I think Oriental Adventures had it right with the weapon list provided there. Things like the lajatang and three-section staff double weapons (requiring Exotic Weapon Profiency feat) could be useful.

it's a shame that 3.5E didn't borrow more heavily for monks from that sourcebook - particularly with martial arts styles.

heh, I agree.
The D&D monk in the deafult "western setting" is kind of funny.

They try to shoehorn the Eastern Monk into having the same role of the Western Monk, (brother, abbot, fryer -sorry if I miss use a name here ;))
but then include some fanciful exotic and even some flat out eastern weapons, and I don't have the OA book, but apprently ignore borrowing from one of their own existing products to help thim fit there more accurate archtype.

I don't mean to sound "rantish" it's ok and I can live with it/work around it as a player and just house rule it as a Dm. I just think it is kind of..funny. ;)

I Do think that the monk using the spiked chain Is a cool visual, it makes me think of Jacky Chan.
