In my homebrew I had the Temple of Our Lady of the One True Way. It had all the alignments except NN. There was a male druidic sect in the northern part of the world and a female druiidic sect in the south. The temple of OLotOTW was going to be trying to suppress the northern druidic sect and absorb the southern one as an aspect of Our Lady.
I also had that alignment language was the way folks discussed religious issues, certain buzzwords and phrases would convey something about the ethics and mores of the person and this was what was considered impolite when in conversation with those you didn't know well.
I also had a non-human goddess that was NN, but she was the goddess of Greed and not attractive to the Temple of OLotOTW. A half-orc PC cleric of her faith decided that cures required 'offerings' and it was cool that the dice cooperated by rolling higher for those who actually offered a gold piece or two instead of coppers.
There was one player cleric of OLotOTW and he ended up achieving leadership of the faith. He set up an Inquisition which was reasonably evil since his assassin PC ended up as an Inquisitioner. The other PCs were not pleased but generally managed to stay out of his clutches. The Temple then initiated a Crusade against the orcs in the monster kingdoms. These failed due to lack of PC involvment. they just sent off NPCs with basic orders and waited to hear how it would turn out.
The Temple did good things also, like instituting education for all members of the faith. This was a means to get more people into business, government, etc and expand their power base that way. The Temple did not accept rigid social classes and thought that being incredibly useful people would make them acceptable to the true powers in whatever country they were in.
The majority of the PCs worshipped the male druidic aspect and they did oppose the PC cleric of OLotOTW but it was more "OMG, he is trying to get control of us again." instead of "OMG, he is trying to harm our faith!". The players would have opposed the absorption of the female druidic faith to keep that faith free more than anything else.
