Monsters by alignment

Those are true. I was looking for a listing of all monsters by their most common alignment. I don't know that one exists.

Most animals are neutral.

So are most vermin

Undead, evil

Abberations, chaotic

Constructs neutral

Elementals, neutral

Chaotic creatures: Chaotic

Lawful Creatures: Lawful

Giants, neutral with good or evil tendencies

I haven't seen such a list but would enjoy seeing one if someone were to make it.

Frankly, in 3e, since most creatures can ultimately be of any alignment, such a project strikes me as kinda too much trouble.

It would be a time consuming project...it's a good point you make. And yet if the DM wanted to roll up a random enemy, such a table of monsters listed by alignment might be helpful while brainstorming. And, such a table wouldn't betray the idea that a monster can be of an alignment which is uncommon to its type. Alignments are merely orientating generalizations.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it would definitely be useful... just too much work for my tastes. :) But if you make such a list (and I encourage you to do so, and even to include the MM2 and FF monsters in it), please share with the class! :)

In the AD&D days, I took on the project to create the Battle of All Alignments. All the monsters in the monster books had to fight each other to see which alignment was superior. Since true Neutral outnumbered the others by far, the first round had each outside alignment take on an eighth of the forces that true Neutral had. If true Neutral won any of the fights (which they did), whatever was left over joined forces to fight in the second round.

A friend and I did the battle twice - the first time was with the MM and Fiend Folio. Lawful Evil dominated, mainly because the imps were impervious to normal weapons at the time. They just plowed through the animals and dinos, etc. We repeated the battle again when the MM2 came out. I believe Neutral Evil won by a nose.

That aberrations would all be chaotic didn't occur to me immediately, but some on such a short list are obvious, like Lawful and Chaotic creatures. The purpose behind my idea would be to have random charts of monsters listed by the alignment most common to their specific race. Maybe I'll do that.

Like, list 10 chaotic evil monsters. I could flip through the MM and pick them out, but I thought it would be cool to have another, faster method. Why would it help me in creating an adventure? Because, although alignment is not a rigid dictating force of personality or actions, it's still a good starting point. After all I can pick out critters by CR (which was a GREAT addition to 3E), or by terrain, so why not alignment?

I think I'll do this, and hopefully I'll have enough time to include it in the freelance project I'm working on. But I'd share it here first. Are the Fiend Folio and MMII books cool? I haven't heard much about them, and haven't had a chance to check them out yet.
