Monstrous Races in Sigil - Which Ones?

TarionzCousin

Second Most Angelic Devil Ever
Which monstrous races would live in or visit Sigil and why?

Aside from the PHB races, and the “Planescape” races (aasimar, bariaur, genasi, githzerai, planar races, and tieflings) what specific monsters would most likely be found in Sigil? Which ward(s) would live in or visit?

Criteria: I think that Sigil would be populated by humanoids, mostly medium or large size--none too big to fit comfortably in the city. Fairly intelligent. If they’re common, they probably have an interest in what Sigil has to offer: portals, philosophy, and/or interplanetary commerce.

Here are my thoughts so far:
Good Guys
1. Angels – An astral deva, maybe. Uncommon at best. Lady’s Ward.
2. Archons – Maybe a lowly Lantern Archon or three. Lady’s Ward.
3. Eladrin – A ghaele or a coure. Lady’s Ward, Market.
4. Guardinals – Some mustevals, and ursinals. Clerk’s to Market.
5. Cambions - No doubt hiding from their masters. (okay, but why are they good guys? ;) )

Misunderstood Types
6. Demons – Rare to uncommon for most. Most commonly seen: Quasits, Succubi, a Lillitu on vacation. Lower Ward, Hive.
7. Devils – Rare to uncommon. The occasional Bone Devil, Erinyes, Imps, and some abishai for Torment’s sake. Hive, Lower Ward.
8. Yugoloth – None that you would notice.

Others
9. Fey – Some “urban” fey. What are those and where can I find them?
10. Genies - Some Jann, an Efreet visiting.
11. Githyanki - A few, just to annoy the githzerai. :D
12. Lillendi – Some at the communal art enclave in Market Ward.
13. Mercane – Common, but few in number. Market/Guildhall.
14. Night Hags – Gotta have a few, doing business in the Lower Ward and Hive.
15. Rilmani – Rarely, probably on a specific errand.

Eberron Races (changelings, shifters, warforged) :
16. All - Uncommon but you could probably find a couple around the Great Bazaar.

Planar Handbook (buomman, mephlings, neraphim, shadowswyfts):
17. The only one of these to strike my fancy are the mephlings. I’ll have a couple of those sprinkled around.

All arguments pointed discussions are welcome.

P.S. I’m sure I’ve left several worthy races out, most notably the rogue modron. Please remind me of whom I’ve forgotten.

I believe it's implied that at least one half-fey runs a bar called the Portal Jammer in the PSCS over at planewalker... ;) Fey would likely be found either in the center of a social environment, bars, clubs, brothels or Sens-*ahem* Entertainer's Guild meetings. Or they'll be found prowling the depths of a field of kudzu-like razorvine, stalking intruders.

I would be tempted to do something large and inhuman. Just to avoid the star trek effect (i.e. it's all human or humanoid)

Like a bunch of oversized (small house like) creatures that rolled into one of the poorer wards but provide some kind of useful material or service for people.
But that may be an off topic suggestion.

Honestly, I would imagine round about all of 'em.

It's Sigil. Doorway to Everywhere. I can't think of a single place more likely to have as broad a cross-section of inhabitants

Answer: Z, all of the above and more. Anything. Well, anything that isn't a deity or equivalent critter (arch-fiend or what-have-you).

If you want one of the Wards to be inhabited primarily by half-fiendish vampiric insectile vorpal bunnies, well then, you darned well can. :uhoh:

Besides, not like they won't eventually be bumped off a gaggle of drunken Xaositect tiefers or somesuch, at some point, anyway..........

I always have to introduce some Reaves in Sigil by using them to start a bar fight with a PC early on in the campaign. They're usually in the Hive or Lower Ward. I don't know why, but I really like those guys :P

Khaasta would make appearances in the Market Ward, trying to steal them some new slaves.

Don't forget the Slaad over in the Hive Ward.

I also stick Spikers & Bladelings in the Lower Ward.

As others have said above, I'd include as much as possible.

The first time I played Planescape (when it came out) we basically said to the players that you can look like anything, but pick something to base it on....
so we could have a tall slender humanoid gray mouse with the stats and abilities of a human or the same thing but a squirrel ...or maybe the squirrel is based on an elf....

I think we even had someone from Dark Sun in the game...

It didn't matter...in Sigil anything can be.....

I'd say that everything neutral has a place in Sigil, at least. Some of the more extreme-alignmented creatures would not tolerate the city, but other than that, it's a free-for-all.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet

Doppelgangers - At home in cities, true jacks-of-all-trades.

Maugs - Masterless soldiers of the Planes, found anywhere there's conflict. I'd imagine the Harmonium / Mercykillers might hire a few of them (they take orders well, are essentially unbribable).

Rakshasa - They like the finer things in life, and enjoy having a good supply of lessers to torment, play with and/or feast upon.

The only intelligent races I would not expect to see on the Planes in any number are dragons.

My quick answer would be - all of them. :)

But just to throw something a little more useful out there, I've always pictured there being a "giant" neighborhood somewhere where everything was sized for Large and Huge creatures.

Otherwise, definitely a lot of outsiders of all types. I'd picture Sigil to be roughly 1/3 humanoid, 1/3 outsider, and 1/3 everything else imaginable.

Good point. Like what, for example?

Agamemnon, I agree--especially about the Maugs. I'll throw a couple Rhuk (Rhun?) in with them too, the Rhino-humanoid extra-Lawful monks.

Maybe a good additional question would be "Which humanoid races would be in which Factions?"
