Monte's The Book of Iron Might is a surprise

Generally I like Monte's works. I love the Books of Eldritch and Hallowed Might. I adore Arcana Unearthed. Chaostech didn't really turn by socks blue, but that is only one, so I forgive him happily ;)

I will be very interested to see what this one shapes up to be -- the Ironborn don't do a thing for me, but the rest of it looks interesting.

I believe this is Mike Mearls doing. Mike was bitching about the rules for Warforged as previewed in Dragon somewhere in this forum a while back, stating it was too restrictive or something like that, so I guess he created his own version of them for Monte's book.

Well, the whole book is written by Mike Mearls, according to the web site. Unless you mean "Malhavoc" when you say "Monte's." ;)

Just to put in my 2 cents, I think it's kind of refreshing to have a book of new feats and combat styles with no new spells or prestige classes. Don't get me wrong, I like PrCs a LOT, but I think it would be interesting to see what he does with just feats. I'm intrigued by the "stunts" part, too.

I'm very curious to see how this book will be received. We'll be doing a *lot* of web previews and designer's diaries on the book. One of the things Monte, Sue, and I have talked about is creating more of a build-up to new books.

Once the book is out of playtesting, I can start to talk about it. At this point, I don't want to say it'll have X or Y, only to have that change in playtest. The new combat rules in particular need a lot of heavy duty testing. They open up a lot of possibilities, but we need to keep things balanced without bogging down fights.

I will say this - it's going to be funny to hear people come up with theories about why the ironborn are in the book, when the answer is so staggeringly trivial that I sense no one is going to believe me when I tell the story.

Did you use that on a whim or is it another of these words? Shouldn't it be fingerspitzengefuhl? I mean, uber's lacking the umlaut as well.

I did use it on a whim. It's quite a common expression in Swedish (even though it's German). The word describes what I wanted to say exactly. :) Even though my spelling was off.

fingerspitzengefuhl

fingerspitzengefuhl

I'm not spelling that wrong again.

I was just thinking last night how I should probably stop purchasing rules-heavy books and focus more on campaign settings and adventures (figuring I have enough d20 rule books as it is).

BUT, I like the products you've written, Mike, so I'll probably make an exception for this one.

(As an aside, I wonder if any other d20 author even comes close to you with regard to how many products you've written or been involved with for the system. It's almost creepy when I go through my collection and see your name in so many of the products therein.)

But what does it mean!!!!???

Construct PC

I don't want to derail the thread here but I wanted to point out that Mythic Races from FFG has a web enhancement with a construct style PC in it. Philip Reed has his Construct book with two adventures out for it.

The construct as a PC is nothing new or shocking.

I look forward to the book and this version. As another person pointed out, I hope this leads to another book such as a Book of Knives of something for rogues.

Will there be notes on which feats would make talents or ceremonies for a AU setting or which game mechanics are appropriate for said system? While it shares many roots with standard d20, it has enough of a spin that I think some sidebars would be a nice touch.

Davem,

Just goes to show, when it comes to being a great RPG Author, Mike is a step above most others.

Btw Mike I figured the reason you put them in there is cause you like Mechs. ;)

Or you just wanted some nice seige engines. ;)

Joe,

You're so right in that construct PCs aren't a new thing. Scarred Lands had em too. But moving along, like everyone else I'm very interested to see these feats, combined with the action improvements and combat styles. This most certainly reminds me why I like combat so much.
