More Cthulhu Questions!

First Post
ok im in the process of reading The Dunwhich Horror (and im suddenly picturing the daughter as that crazy woman from Blair Witch).

So im hoping to start a PBP of Cthulhu soon. Another question (or 4 or 5) that i have is ...

1) Cthulhu-esque music? I have audiogalaxy. Any suggestions?

2) 1920-30s or modern day?

3) Is math really all that important because i suck at it.

4) Online sources (i have) but what about cool newpaper clippings or photos?

that should be it for right now. OH!

5) How should i get them together (i guess it depends on the setting now doesnt it?)

6) To Cast A Deadly Spell and Witch Hunt were movies based on Cthulhu. Or are those too cheesy?

If I had a nickel for every Call of Cthulhu thread I moved to d20 System Games, I'd have... err... almost $.70. But I could buy a candy bar!

I'll slide this over.

1) If you're Playing By Post, how is music going to factor into the game?

3) I can't see how math would be all that important.

4) It would be a great idea to go through the newspapers to find stories that could be twisted to the macabre. They are very common, so start looking. If you end up running a contemporary game, it would even be kewl to clip those articles and show your players. (or edit them a little to add more mystery)

6) Necronomicon and Reanimator were also based on H.P. Lovecraft's stories.

Cast a deadly spell had tons of Lovecraft references, but the style was, of course, no where near Lovecraft. Witch Hunt was more near the style, and was almost a serious version of the first movie.

Reanimator was GOOD. I'll say it again. GOOOD. That was the kind of atmosphere you are looking for. In the Mouth of Madness (1995) With Sam Neill was also quite good and probably exactly what you are looking for.

Audio CD named "Horror from Beyond" I believe - I bought it at Gencon 1999, and got rid of it a year ago because I never used it. But perfect CoC music.

My opinion is modern day, but 1920's is excellent, if you can carry off the mood. I never could.

Unsure of what you mean about the math. Addition and SUbtraction to play the game, yes. But you don't have to know non-euclidean Geometry. :D

CoC d20 rulebook offers excellent ideas on hooks to start a campaign.

Good Luck!

Hurm. Why do you need music in a PBP?

2) 1920-30s or modern day?

I prefer modern day. Sure you will capture the true flavor of Lovecraft by setting it in the past. But how big is the trunk in a 1920's car? How much does a pint of kerosene oil cost? If you don't know the answers to these questions, I do not suggest running it in the past. If you *really* want to - wait until Pulp Cthulhu comes out.

3) Is math really all that important because i suck at it.

Math is always important in gaming, sadly. I'm not saying you need algebra. But you should learn the basics, and you'll be fine.

On another tangent, yes, algebra is important. And you will use it in day to day life. The other day, in the middle of a meeting, I had to quickly remember the pythagorean theorem for some obscure reason. Thankfully I remembered it.

4) Online sources (i have) but what about cool newpaper clippings or photos?

Good question. I don't know of any - but if I find someone I'll tell you.

that should be it for right now. OH!

Very very very difficult. Difficult without being cheesy, that is. In my mind, what you have to do is bite the cheese bullet and do it that way. You meet in a bar and a monster attacks. You're at the reading of a will, and a monster attacks. You're all at a funeral, and someone starts to shed cockroaches. You get the idea. =)

6) To Cast A Deadly Spell and Witch Hunt were movies based on Cthulhu. Or are those too cheesy?

I haven't seen those! But then again, I haven't heard about 'em.

My friends and I are planning on a first time one shot game of CoC in a few weeks. My two buddies will be visiting from out of town for a few days and we thought it would be cool to play ourselves, with them coming in from out of town to start the game off... Seeing as I live in Charleston, SC which is known for some spookiness, we thought that it would be a good setting. Plus, they have been here before, so we are all familiar with the area. I don't know if we will continue the game afterward, but it should prove fun for a one time game...

Loosely based. Very loosely. They're Raymond Chandleresque noir stories set in a universe where magic exists. Both have some Lovecraftian trappings (the detective's name is Phil Lovecraft, after all) but they're not really in the same genre.

(And I really liked Deadly Spell, but didn't care for Witch Hunt.)

Sounds fun. Perhaps you should do a Story Hour based off of it.
