One good thing about this is that Calimshan is getting a deep-dive, so they aren't shying away from potentially controversial areas. That makes a potential update to Kara-Tur a but more likely. But in these books, I would guess a quick, very general overview (like in the 3e FRCS) would likely be the most we'll see.
Calimshan never had quite as much baggage as Kara-Tur or Al-Quadim. But, yes, it is an interesting exercise in brining in some less Western Europe-y settings.

The more general regions will be covered in the Player's Guide book. l would guess Kara-Tur would likely just get a mention (at most) than any real coverage, though.

I figure Kara Tur, Zakhara, Maztica, and Laerakond, and maybe Shyr on Abeir (those 5 have been the only FR Continents besides Faerun properly explored & detailed for FR, (Achrome, Katashaka, Osse only get rare tidbits) might get at most a page each, and if we are really, really lucky a map (and if the book doesn't have a map, maybe Beatle's & Grimm will if they do an FR box set thingy)

Shyr despite being on Abeir might actually be the most important to Faerun because Shyr is the one that switched locations with Faerun (except Tymanther which was originally on Laerakond), Shyr is the Abeir equivalent to Toril's Faerun.

I would really love it if WotC would produce an actual Abeir campaign guide. I'd love to explore a world openly ruled by dragons!

And Primordials, Laerakond was the one where Dragons revolted against the Primordials, but ironically Laerakond MIGHT still be on Toril instead of switched back when Maztica returned. Shyr on the other hand I believe is more Primordial ruled still, an empired run by Genasi.

Yeah, I would not expect anything much outside of Faerûn. As it is, it will be an impressive feat if Faerûn gets good detail across the board, which I think it might juat achieve.

Thanks, that is a lot more nation specific than I thought it would be. I was thinking more regional, like Sword Coast, The North, Inner Sea, Mysterious East, and Kara Tur.
The Dragonborn nation of Tymanther and the Genasi nation of Akanul would be a nice addition. ;)

The Council of Wyrms setting writ extra large. ;) Instead of an archipelago to rule over, it's an entire world ruled by dragons. ;)

If Abeir had its' own setting, what it could be like? And when would the setting take place? Before or after the spellplague.

Well for one thing, magic works very differently on Abeir then Toril, it's in general a much lower magic setting and perhaps despite that more fantastical. We get a taste of Abeir directly in I think in the novel The Devil You Know.

I was considering getting the new FR book, but over time I've realised I'm probably not going to get it in the end (maybe if I can pick it up at a discount). Because I'm not moving to 5.5 (and only rarely playing 5e nowadays) I just don't think that this is going to be useful for me. The lore might be interesting but not worth the price to buy. Still, cool that they are putting out what sounds like a decent FR book, I quite liked SCAG but there definitely needed to be something better.
If nothing else, I'm sure new FR content will show up in the DMs Guild around the same time the new FR books drop. Maybe some of that will meet your needs.

At most anywhere outside of Faerun would get a from a couple of paragraphs or even a page at most for the more important locations. This goes for Planes,, Demiplanes, Continents, FAR Realms, etc...
