He was best known for his Fokker DR.I (triplane), although he scored many of his kills in an Albatros D.III, which was not all red (only the fuselage was red, and that only after some time). The DR.I was all red.

Some British pilots took to painting the noses of their planes red to indicate that they were hunting Richtoven. A case of sympathetic magic?
