What does the footnote say?

For purposes of discussion, the footnote to which I am referring reads as follows (note that there are actually two footnotes):

PHB said:
* You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new weapon, skill, school of magic, or selection of spells.

** You can gain thisfeat multiple times. Its effects stack.

The feats marked with the first footnote?

  1. Exotic Weapon Proficiency
  2. Improved Critical
  3. Martial Weapon Proficiency
  4. Skill Focus
  5. Spell Focus
  6. Weapon Finesse
  7. Weapon Focus
  8. Spell Mastery
  9. Weapon Specialization

The feats marked with the second?

  1. Toughness
  2. Extra Turning

You'll note, I'm sure, the lack of Dodge in both of these lists.

Dodge bonuses are not normally availalble for purchase. Last time i checked the DMG even warned about those on most magic items. As far as what a feat is worth, there is only one core feat that lets you increase armor a point against all foes, an that is only if you already had a natural armour bonus.

Would you still feel it was overcosted at 2 feats for an Insight bonus?

I'm not criticizing the fact that you offer such a feat--more options are always better than fewer options. I'm just saying that it's not worth it to me. If I played a fighter in your campaign, I'd much rather buy two cool feats, such as Power Attack + Cleave, than burn both of those precious feat slots just to pick up a mere +1 AC. It's not worth it to me, and more importantly, it's not exciting. I'm all about exciting feats. :)

The only reason I would ever take Dodge is to open up the Spring Attack feat chain. I would never take that feat otherwise.

You can't shell out a mere 1,000gp for Cleave, Improved Critical, or Empower Spell.

My point exactly!

YMMV, but giving a single feat the same effective bonus as a 1,000 gp magic enhancement can be viewed as unbalancing...

Money comes and goes, but feats are a precious, finite resource. I'd rather spend the 1,000gp than burn two feats to gain that paltry bonus. :)

Goes back to RPing style then. Typical NPC earns (per a previous thread) about a gold a day. Your blowing close to 3 years worth of earnings for any normal citizen to gain a +1 AC. That's a lot to spend on what is considered an insignificant bonus. That's just my perspective though.

Again, YMMV. :)

MMDV :p

PCs aren't NPCs. They are rich beyond the dreams of any peasant farmer. Player characters drip with wealth and exude fortune; it is pointless to suggest otherwise by the RAW. Thus, the RP card has little bearing on the mechanics of feat choices beyond what one envisions for one's PC within the boundaries of the DM's world.
