Wanted to know the most interesting characters you have played or seen according to 5e rules.
Not looking for 'extra' or additional things added...strictly what is allowed by normal character creation.

All the PCs in my games are rather boring compared to some of the things you will see posted here. I suppose a dragonborn is the most bizarre race and a ranger or barbarian for a class. Most are human fighters, dwarf clerics, and halfling rogues. The interesting part comes from background and how they are played.

Right now the dragonborn cleric has a noble background and a few followers that follow the group on adventures. One is a squire that is almost a 2nd PC, but mostly hangs back with the others tending camp and such. The halfling thief was once a beggar and follows the cleric 'protecting' him more to keep healing flowing but tells the others that is is because he was saved from the streets by him. The human fighter has a slave debt he is saving to repay.

Not normally that interested in character design, I have drawn up one that I find interesting. Not so much for its mechanics, but for the theme behind it. Mechanics work fairly well though.

Mountain Dwarf Acolyte Level 3 Lawful Divine Soul Sorcerer
Mountain Dwarf grants medium armor and war hammer proficiency (used 2 handed)
Cantrips: Fire Bolt, Green Flame Blade, Guidance, Word of Radiance
Lv 1: Absorb Elements, Bless, Shield, Healing Word
Lv 2: Misty Step

The concept is Thor from Thor:Rangnork. Totally believes he's the son of Dumadoin (God of Secrets Under the Mountain) and that he's the wielder of the Mountain's Fire (hence fire/radiant based spells). He aims his hammer to throw a Fire Bolt, holds it aloft for Word of Radiance, twirls it to block weapons with Shield and energy attacks with Absorb Elements. He believes he can fly short distances with the hammer with Misty Step (even though he doesn't). The DM was given full reign to determine how much he believes is true and how much is totally bogus.

Character downside is that it's totally MAD. Need Cha and Str for combat, as well as Con and Dex to stay alive. Works fairly well with point buy, leaving Int and Wis at 8.

Personally, I have a few...

Rattle (Kenku Bard with Haunted One Background)

Was the personal test subject and favorite pet of a mad elven wizard. He earned his name for the joy felt when old bones were given to him for food (hence the rattling). He was rescued by High Elves and trained to play music to soothe his troubled mind.He prefers to play different bells he comes across but also uses a lute.

Tabinak Malvdar (High Elf Wizard/Cleric with Acolyte Background)

Raised in Evermeet, he loved to study and read with his grandfather over a warm mug of fresh tea. Eventually he learned of the Blackstaff Academy and has left Evermeet to study at the academy. He has training in Herbalism Kit and uses it to make tea.

Melek (Winged Tiefling Cleric with Noble Background)

He physically represents a deal with a devil that he ancestor made that ruined the noble family. Now after many years the blood has once again revealed itself. He has chosen to enter into service to Lathander to atone for his families previous sins.

Asarim Oorr (Aarakocra Druid with Far Traveler Background)

Recently, aarakocra elders on Mount Star in the High Forest detected changes in the prevailing winds that they regarded as a bad omen. A young shaman (druid class) has been sent as an emissary to the local area to see what is disturbing the land.

I played a gnomish wizard, Professor Higgins-Boatswain, a particle metaphysicist who was raising funds to build a superconducting supercollider to smash magic items together at near the speed of light (which requires only 33 million commoners using readied actions to hand-off the items from one to another, wrapping around the globe 15 times -- so probably best to build the collider on one of the outer planes, maybe the Concordant Opposition).
