Mountian Giants in MM2

First Post
Did anyone else notice in the new MM2 that the Mountain Giant
had zoomed up to 40 feet tall and 50,000 pounds weight.
I looked up the mountain giant in second edition and they were
14' and 5000 lbs. ?!

That makes them the biggest giants there are and about
double the height of all the rest of the giants and even Titans!
(I think). Is this an error or do they mean it?

Thanks,

Bob

Sounds a bit odd, I looked them up in the 1st Edition Fiend Folio and they are 14' there also. But then 3rd Ed is odd, just look what they did to halflings, gnomes and drow.

This was definitely on purpose. During the MM2 seminar at Gencon, the WotC guys talked about developing the mountain giant for 3E; they wanted it to be the biggest, baddest, all out giant that it could be. Hence the size difference.

That doesn't stop it from being a pain in the arse for those of use who already had mountain giants in a specific role in our games. In my 2e campaign, one of the kingdoms was carved out of the mountains after defeating the local mountian giants.

Had they these stats, that would have never come to pass.

And unlike powered-up dragons, I don't have a convenient back explanation to explain it in the context of my campaign. I guess I'll just go with the Creature Catalog version.

Here's one: (And this is just a suggestion, not a critique...)

While the Mountain Giants were wiped out almost entirely to an individual, a small band of freakishly large individuals were able to fight their way free. Heredity took it's course, and voila! 40' mountain giants... Very Uncommon, however.

Perhaps a cool monster, but they really should have given them a different name, since they differ so markedly from mountain giants in older edition.

you’re thinking of their name as a race and not a descriptor...

ie. Not all monsters-under-the-bed are of the monsters-under-the-bed™ race...some are just monsters that live under the bed

if it makes it easier, these (the new ones) are giants from a different set of mountains.

That's fine...just make it so that "Giants" who live in the "Mountains" are referred to as Mountain Giants by the local populace (even though they are probably nothing more then fairly advanced Hill Giants).

In this case, the locals who referred to the giants that were defeated as Mountain Giants, would have had no idea what a Mountain Giant really is.
