Murder is the Pits

Vanitri - You find two armorers with a set of mitheral chain, but they are loath to part with the shirt alone at a reasonable price - after all, who's going to come along and buy a pair of mithral chain pants? Finally you find one with a chain shirt alone. It is both guady and artistic - some of the rings were covered in a film of gold prior to the creation of the chain, and were integrated in a patern that gives the impression of shifting dragon scales. It is on display on a moving maniquin and its hard not to be entranced by its look when in motion. The shopkeeper makes a great deal of noise about the added value of the gold and the artisty, but cannot deny that it was a special order uncollected and unpaid for and thus represents a loss to him as long as it reamains unsold. You suspect you would get it for standard price with a bit of bargining.

Your questions about the beast match reveal that there are three basic types - giant vermin, usually poisoness, Undead creatures, often large skeletons, and magical beast, which are usualy controled by magical means. Gladiators fighting magical beasts or vermin are equiped ahead of time with magic rings who turn any damage they do non leathal. Sadly, the beasts are not comperably equiped. ;)

Micheal - you speak to two herbalists who sell in bulk. When you mention bloodfire to the first, she looks concerned. "I can get that for you, lad, but if you don't mind me saying, I'm not sure you should be using too much of it. For a housewife's headache or a farmer's sore back its the best pain releiver that will not leave them hankering for more even when not in pain if you catch my drift, but if your pain comes from a sword cut or a set of broken ribs, it has its dangers. It can ease the pain while slowing the healing, and thats not so good in the long run. If you don't mind me saying, tied to the Arena as you seem to be," She nods politely in the direction of your collar, "I'm not sure there would be many cases where you would want to use it as these others. For sore muscles from practice, I would suggest a numbing salve to apply directly, perhaps with savan-mint, which warms the muscles to relax them...." she continues on a bit, quite educationaly, about alternate pain relieving techniques when you wish to risk neither opiates nor blood thinners.

The second also seems skeptical of your need, but just says "Don't have that much bloodfire in stock right now. My usual shipment isn't due till month end, and I had a run on it. You could try Risa, down the other block, but she'll talk your ear off."

Ironwolf - your psicrystal finds Click (or maybe Clack) talking to his brother back in the barracks. As it gets into 'ear' shot, one of them is saying "...match tommorrow. New kids get cocky, make mistakes, get hurt. We should try to stay close to any of them who might need support. Petra always says we have to help the others in our stable." His brother nods and goes out to the common area, returning later with ale and cheese. Click is engaged in some sort of work on his bunk painting on something, but its out of the psi-crystal's veiw.

Rosalynn - While in the shopping district, you see the monk you met last night coming out of a small building with a sign of a lit candle out front, and the words "all welcome". Seeing you, she alters course slightly to say hello. "I heard your first match went well today." she says smiling. "I had a good bout myself with a giant spider. If you are going to be applying first aid in the ring though, you should invest in some nice big scarves. Good for a million uses."

Vanitri says to shopkeeper "Tis quite an intriguing shirt. I will definately consider it."

Vanitri shares what he has learned about the beast fights with his friends. "Perhaps we can get a clue as to what we will be facing, so we can plan ahead. Rumors fly around the pits."

Michael nods to Risa as she lectures, takes a few notes, and presses a few interesting herbs into his journal for later reference.
The second one, of course, gets more conversation.
"Guess there's been a lot of trouble in town then? What's thickened up all the blood in the city?"

He will also take a moment to speak with Vanitri about the upcoming beastmatch.
"Spears and clubs, you think? Clubs are cheap and good for killing skeletons, spears for holding off dumb animals."
Michael looks like he's hoping for undead, himself.

Rosalynn smiles. "Thank you very much for the advice." She replies, thankful that she's got a few now...and perhaps wonders if this person is the one who left them for her.

Once healed, Ironwolf will be happy to check things out at the stables and see what kind of beasties the stable hands are discussing.

[snip]

Ironwolf suggests to the others that with the fan reactions he has observed, the murders may have been motivated by "matters of the heart." He puts forward a theory that the succesfull gladiators may have been recieving sexual advances from an arena fan to whom the murderer had become emotionally attached. If he can do so privately, he will mention this thought to Petra and ask if she has any information regarding gender, sexual preference, and known romantic interests of the murder victims.

ooc: Did any of this come to anything? Ironwolf will recall his crystal to it's normal hiding spot in his necklace.

Ironwolf: The stablehands are prepping giant vermin for fights the next morning, which mostly consists of reducing their feed and putting certain herbs in what they give them. Someone is going to be fighting several giant centipedes tommorrow, whether its you or someone else is unknown. No magical beasts are being prepared, and from what you gather, there is no prep the stablehands do that would alert them to when undead are being used.

When your crystal returns to you, it has memories of various sealed boxes under different gladiators bunks. Most of the bags and boxes it was able to get into held peices of paper, cloth and coins. In one bag under the twins' bunks, there were some strange stips of cloth about a foot long and two inches wide, coated with a rubbery substance that made them smooth. There was also hair in the bag, not a lock like yours, but quite a bit of it.

Petra, as she predicted on the road, is unable to speak to you privately in the barracks, but does praise you lavishly in the common area for your successful matches.
