The fact that it isn't reduced by penetrating attack is the big advantage for me.

If you don't buy impervious, Protection isn't affected by Penetrating either. ;) Defensive Roll and regular (non Impervious) Protection are a closer comparison since they're the same price.

While protection needs to become impervious in order to have its full effect against someone using an attack with the penetrating extra, the character with defensive roll gets the same bonus at half the cost.

Um...penetrating attacks ONLY affect Impervious defenses, cancelling the "no need to save" effect of Impervious. Against non-impervious, Penetrating does nothing.

So comparing non-extra'ed Protection and Defensive Roll, neither is affected by Penetrating.

On the whole, I think they're about equal, the choice between them is really guided by the type of character you want to play.

I don't agree they're equal at all, and say that the choice is *entirely* about character type rather than weighing benefits. For my Spidey or Batman type, I'm obviously going to buy Defensive Roll. And feel a bit cheated. :)

Hmmm. I don't know. I mean it certainly still looks quite a bit worse

I mean, which is more common? Losing your Dex bonus or being Nullified, Drained, Disintegrated etc.).

It looks like it is commonly worse, but in a very narrow situation, it's better.

Stealing my lines again, Jeff! :p

Regarding the argument: "Buy uncanny dodge and you won't lose your Defensive Roll bonus to Toughness", I'd say that it's great that I can spend more points to get the same net effect! ;)

They're close enough that I'm okay with it (i.e. without house rules), but it's still a bit sketchy to me.

Uncanny Dodge and Evasion are a whole other conversation, though. They're so cheap, it's hard to imagine not taking them for ANY character. I would have liked some requirements.

How about Defensive Roll as a requirement :)

Steve, when the M&M boards come back up and M&M 2e is in widespread release, will you post previews of Freedom City and the Mastermind's Manual?

I want to start an M&M 2e campaign as soon as the book comes out but I desparately need the new hitpoint rules variant information. Would it be possible to post a preview of that particular section on the website?

Pretty please with sugar on top?? I really need those hitpoint rules desparately!! :)

A quick question as I couldn't find this. Did they eliminate energy field or change its name?
As an independent power, yes. What you want is the Aura power modifier on page 112, which now affects any Touch Range power. Strike + Aura = the equivalent of M&M 1e's Energy Field.
