My apologies to AEG and the Spycraft team

I was shocked that spycraft got blanked at the enines. What surprised me more was that shadowrun v.4 beat it out in a category or 2. Surprised me as I heard a lot of griping about SR4. Oh well Spycraft 2.0 got my vote. It's the best game out there IMHO. I don't know M&M2.

As usual, all the griping masked a rather sizeable number of people who LOVED the smoothed-off edges of the new system. There were a pretty large number of adopters, from the info I've seen here and at Dumpshock.

Yeah, the system was a fairly big departure from 3rd edition, so if you liked 3rd edition, you are prone to gripe.

But most unbiased reviews I have read attest to the fact that, despite its differences with 3rd edition which might displease some vocal diehards, that Shadowrun 4th edition is an EXCELLENT set of rules and a big upgrade.

Well, having finally gotten a look at Spycraft (and getting to play with Alex) at GenCon, I wish I could have my vote back. For me, doing modern well is harder than doing supers well, and while I think M&M is pretty nice, for me Spycraft had a deeper hole to dig out of. I meant to go grab a copy Sunday morning but didn't have time before my 10:30 game and then had to run to the airport. Soon, though, soon it will be added to my collection.

I was a 3rd edition fan, and I liked the changes I have seen compared to 2nd edition. But the 4th edition is again a big improvement. Unfortunately, as I am not very interested in running a SR game, our group will probably not play it again any time soon...

Yeah, 3rd edition was good... heck, all the editions of SR have had their own appeal but for the longest time it was one of those quirky rule sets you put up with because it had a great setting.

4th edition was the first time I played because of the rules, not in spite of them, so it's win for best rules didn't puzzle me at all.

You know...

It's discussions like this that sometimes make me wonder why there isn't a "Most Improved RPG" category in the ENnies.

:p

That implies it sucked before, and I don't know if anyone would be up for that. :D

Well, not necessarily... but I see your point.

It's just that sometimes it seems the winners for the "best" categories aren't always chosen for actually being the best, but for being so much better than a previous edition by comparison. Maybe it's just me.

That wasn't what I was trying to say about Shadowrun. The previous edition wasn't bad, but the new edition is just flat GREAT.

It's a legitimate winner.

I realize everyone has a problem wrapping their minds around that, since it's a non-d20 game and all, and not one of the "sexier" choices, but it didn't surprise me in the least that it won best rules.
