My kingdom for a setting

Valus has a very gritty feel (I haven't read the country sections yet) with a lot of lawlessness fitting in well. Modrons are a bit outside the cosmology but devils and celestials fit in well. It is and it isn't high magic, summonings can draw divine retribution in Valus but clerics get extra powers/detriments depending upon seasons.

Thanks for the plug Voadam, you beat me to it ;)

That almost perfectly describes a homebrew campaign-disguised-as-a-setting that I'd love to run someday... unfortunately, I haven't written any of it up in any sort of detail, so I can't really help you much. :)

Once you've got your world, consider dropping Geanavue into it, wspecially if you happen to choose Kalamar, where the city is set by default.

Very detailed, very lawful city.

Regardless what setting you finally decide to choose, I suggest that you check out a low-level adventure called "The Gryphon's Legacy" by Wolfgang Bauer, published by now defunct (?) Gaslight Press. It contains some information on the setting that should have been the standard for the Sun & Scale series of modules from Gaslight. The main idea of the adventure is that the PCs get a royal charter to settle in the border regions, and getting to keep whatever land they can hold on to. They are also told that there is a castle, Gryphon's Rock, that they may claim as their own. The opposition mainly consists of hobgoblins and assorted other "vermin".
I read about the adventure in an old issue of Dragon and thought it sounded cool, so I bought it from Noble Knight. I've read it a couple of times and I think it could be rather good for a group that like the idea of become owners to a castle. I haven't played it yet, as my players had advance to far by the time I got it.

Anyhow, just my two centimes... :)

Cheers,

Didn't realise this thread was still about!

I picked up a copy of Kalamar and I really like it!

I think the Young Kingdoms is the place for this game.

I'd add a knightly order that spans Kalamar and the Young Kingdoms - possibly linked to Knight of Gods worshipers. Founded by the long dead dragon riding paladin/champion guy whose name I can't recall right now... Think that'd fit right in.

The campaign would be revolving around the PCs running a small mining town, on the borders of Korak and just into the Eldor Mountains.

Area seems just right: hobgoblin nation, bickering nobles, nearby desert, lizardmen swamps and mountains full of 'stuff'. Plenty of variety.

Really do like the hobgoblins - they look like a lot of fun :)

Organisations are fun too. Blue Serpent is particularly amusing!

Not definitely set on Kalamar yet, another setting under consideration as well. Even if I don't use Kalamar it was well worth a read.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Why do you need a setting? You can pull maps and source material from Dragonlance etc without using the entire setting. It is a simple job to rename things and then write up short histories yourself.

Just a thought.

That's what I've always done before... homebrew all the way. Quite often based on stolen maps, as my cartography talents aren't the best.

Partly, I thought I'd try using a published setting for a change - never used on before... Partly because I ended up needing to run the campaign at pretty short notice. None of my recent homebrews would really fit the theme I was after. So time for something new!

Figured having someone else do the bulk of the setting design work would be nice for a change!
