D&D 5E My lvl 3 Paladin just crit for 58 damage - Did I do it right?

First Post
So my lvl 3 Paladin just crit with a Maul for 58 damage. Here is what I did.

Great Weapon Fighter
2d6 Maul
2d6 Had just cast Thundering Smite
2d8 After hitting used a spell slot to Divine Smite
+3 Str

So after the crit I rolled 8d6+4d8+3 (and rerolled 1-2's for Great Weapon Fighter)

Did I do that right?
-Does the crit roll all dice twice, not just the mauls?
-Does Great Weapon Fighter affect the non-maul dice?
-Can you cast a spell and use a spell slot for Divine Smite on the same turn?

Thanks

Yes, that is my reading of how those skills interact. Paladins, especially Vengeance are about novas and boss killing. They're resilient and have some nice healing. Their real weakness is lack of aoe and opportunity cost in holding slots for a critical that might never come.

Good luck.

Yes, this is correct. Also, he can decide to use smite after seeing if it was a critical hit or not.

-Does the crit roll all dice twice, not just the mauls? Roll all dice twice, yes, including from Thundering Smite and Divine Smite.

-Does Great Weapon Fighter affect the non-maul dice?
Going strictly by RAW, I think he can reroll the dices from the maul and the dices from the Thundering Smite, but not from Divine Smite.
Thundering Smite says that "the attack deal and extra 2d6 damage" and Great Weapon Fighting says you can reroll "when you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make". As the spell is writen, we can say the damage is part of the attack, just like the weapon's damage.
Divine smite says you "deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage"; so it seems the radiant damage is not part of the weapon's attack, it's more like another source of damage, so you can't reroll it.
Though, as a DM, I probably wouldn't mind the player rerolling the damage from Divine Smite.

-Can you cast a spell and use a spell slot for Divine Smite on the same turn? Yes, Divine Smite doesn't require actions or bonus actions, you just have to hit the target and say it. Also, when he gets the Extra Attack feature on 5th level, he can even smite twice, as long as he hits both attacks. He could smite even more times if he gets more attacks from other features.

Yes

-Does Great Weapon Fighter affect the non-maul dice?

No. This has been ruled on before. Only get to re-roll weapon damage dice and the damage from Smites/Spells is not weapon damage.

-Can you cast a spell and use a spell slot for Divine Smite on the same turn?

Yes.

This is correct, although the feature itself doesn't specify, the intent as per JC is that the rerolling is only for the weapons damage dice specifically. Not smite or anything else. See here:

So that's the only thing you seem to have done wrong. Your damage total though is totally possible, I did around the same amount of damage myself with a paladin around level 3 using a rapier when I crit. Just roll high :)

Yes, you've devoted a lot of resources to the effort, but you did one big hit. From an action economy perspective, you're doing great on that Smite. However, if you have a party run through 5 encounters between long rests and use 1 or 2 short rests in the middle, you'll find that the paladin does not outclass other classes.
