Mystic Theurge

The MT has other balancing factors, like MAD stats and lower CL.

If you're going wizard/cleric, yes, and that was most likely the intended balance point. A wizard/archivist is Int SAD, and any combination with early entry is only a level or two behind and can easily get double 9s. A wizard 2/archivist 1/MT 17 has double 9s a single level behind a wizard 17 and has his pick of any spells he wants, which is reason enough not to extend MT by 4 levels.

And how is a Wizard 2/Archivist 1 supposed to take a MT level?

I do agree that a wizard/archivist combo gets around the dual-stat problem of the MT but you still end up just as many levels behind.

One of the many early-entry methods allowing arcane 2/divine 1 or arcane 1/divine 2 characters to get into MT and similar PrCs at 3rd level, the means of doing so include but are not limited to Precocious Apprentice, Alternative Source Spell, Versatile Spellcaster, Illumian, and so forth. See here for more information.

Here is an official source stating how the Epic Mystic Theurge works:

When an odd-numbered mystic theurge level above 10th is gained (11th, 13th, 15th, and so on), she gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable), as if she had gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class she belonged to previously, up to the maximum spells per day and spells known by that class. Her caster level in that class also increases by +1.

When an even-numbered mystic theurge level above 10th is gained (12th, 14th, 16th, and so on), she gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable), as if she had gained a level in a divine spellcasting class she belonged to previously, up to the maximum spells per day and spells known by that class. Her caster level in that class also increases by +1

I will point out that archivists want Wis for bonus spells, but you've got a good point. *sigh*

I guess I just want to throw the arcane/divine divide out the window, and have a balanced MT base class. Well, as balanced as any full caster can be.

I'm sorry Mod, I guess undeniably stupid comments bring out the worst in me. I'll avoid it in the future.

ENOUGH. Apologies are not the place to sneak in an attack. That's just tacky! So carry on, folks, and please -- give each other the benefit of the doubt, and err on the side of politeness. -- PCat

Wow, way to go, Visi. Apology and further dissing all at once. And here I thought I really had a point. Sorry to be so undeniably stupid I brought out the WORST in you.

Take it easy, OK? I'm not sure my comment was too bad, considering. Don't give yourself a heart attack or anything.

;)

There is the Fochlucan Lyrist, which has dual spellcasting progression (arcane and divine), full BAB, OK HD, and full Bardic Music progression. FL takes a lot of finagling to enter, though: tons of skillpoints, Bardic stuff, Evasion, Druidic language, and divine casting...

Level 1: Rilkan Factotum. All skills are on skill list, so the skill problems are okay. Take Bardic Tutelage as a feat, and choose Druidic as your language.
Level 2: Rogue. Not much fun here.
Level 3: Rogue. Evasion.
Level 4: Rilkan Rogue substitution level, gains Bardic Music.

BANG! All 3 weird requirements met by fourth level!

Wait, can't you do the same with Druid 1, Bard 1, Rogue 2, save a feat and start the divine magic progression?

Of course. But then you're stuck with three levels that don't have most of the requirement skills, requiring you to have lots of Intelligence, or fall behind on the skills. This way, you at least only need a few Intelligence points.
