NC Game Day (Dates posted for NCGDVI-VII on top of page 16)

Liquid Awesome
Well folks, it's that time again!

I just came off a day of gaming yesterday at Trinocon and had a lot of fun running my Orcz! game. And that brings us to almost exactly two months to go until NCGDV.

Like last time we'll be using the excellent web site that Neal set up for us in order to handle the sign up for games. As I understand it, if you GMed last time and wish to do so again, you do not need to get GM approval. You only need to submit the event you wish to run and then we (the admins) will assign you a table in the time slot that you requested.

Likewise, if you were a player last time and wish to play in one of the games that are posted, you do not need to re-register. Just log in, click on the game in the Schedule and indicate that you want to sign up for it.

The site is located at: http://ncgameday.dhorizon.org/

As for the Pre-Dinner on Friday night, I see no reason not to have it at Errico's again unless there are objections. I would be interested to hear if folks have feedback on how we did the Post-Dinner last time with the pizza tickets and such. From my perspective it seemed to work out fine but the game I was in ran long (and fun) so I wasn't there when most folks were grabbing their dinner.

If you have any questions, fire away and we'll do our best to answer quickly. I look forward to seeing everybody again and having some good gaming.

Well, I was not there last time and the site that Neal designed still does not work for me. The only way I can log in is to find the profile section after searching for a few minutes. If Neal could explain how to do things, then that would be great.

Not sure if I plan on running a game at this event or not. However, I would be interested in learning how the GM log on works.

Pre-game dinner: I liked Ericco's but it is a bit expensive, but if no one else has any objections, then it's cool.

Post-game dinner: How did that work? It does not sound as fun as going out to Rockola like we did in NC 3.

Are we still going to post potential games here? Don't get me wrong, I like that Neal has the website, but I just do not think it is that user-friendly, and the EnWorld connection seems really lost there.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at this game day.

Hey, how was Tri*Noc Con?

The part I experienced was cool. Unfortunately I was only able to attend on Sunday as my daughter's 3rd birthday party occupied the front half of the weekend. Everything was very well organized and the group I had for my Orcz game was great. They were a foursome of gamers who were friends and played together regularly so it went very smoothly.

The other games and exhibits were also neat. I was very impressed by the various miniatures that were entered in the painting contest. My own painting skills stink by comparison. Though honestly I'd be afraid to use the winning entries in a game for fear of having their paint jobs damaged. That's not so much a problem with my amatuerish work. ;)

I'm hoping that I'll be able to participate more fully next year because I get the impression that a lot of the fun and rowdy parts of the Con are on Saturday (particularly at night). I only got to experience the slightly tired and hung over portion of the event. ;)

When I go to the site the Login is right there in the top left corner of the front page. I just enter my name and password and I'm in. Is this not working properly for you? My technical know-how is about zilch so I can't help you if it isn't. But Neal was very responsive to any technical problems last time so I'm sure he'll try and get it fixed if there's a problem.

Pre-game dinner: I liked Ericco's but it is a bit expensive, but if no one else has any objections, then it's cool.

I hadn't really considered it all that expensive. Aren't most of the entrees in the same ballpark as what we'd order at Rockola? Regardless, if others think it's too budget busting them I'm more than willing to consider a change of venue. The location is not all that important to me. Getting to hang out with the ENWorld gang is.

Post-game dinner: How did that work? It does not sound as fun as going out to Rockola like we did in NC 3.

The basic premise was that there were "Pizza Tickets" sold throughout the day. That evening the pizzas were ordered and brought to Talley whereupon you redeemed the tickets and ate the pizza. Pretty simple really.

As for how fun it was, I can't say definitively. The game I was in ran WAY long so we were playing right up until 10:00. In theory I see no reason why it would be less fun to eat pizza at the same tables we were just gaming at instead of eating burgers and fries at another table two blocks away. But I'm still wanting to hear the opinons of those who were more participatory in the social aspect of the dinner that night.

Are we still going to post potential games here? Don't get me wrong, I like that Neal has the website, but I just do not think it is that user-friendly, and the EnWorld connection seems really lost there.

I think some of the user friendliness issues will have been addressed by the time the sign up is in full swing. In particular I think there was some confusion over how the games were categorized for sign up (Walk In vs. Reserved, etc.) but we should be able to get that fixed easily.

All sign up will take place at the site so that we can keep everything in one place for better organization. But I do think there is still a strong role to be played by this thread here at ENWorld. First it is good to have as an advertisment for the game day as a whole to those who frequent this site. I also think it is an ideal place to pimp your individual game if you still need players and such.

Even though we had a few bumps in the road using Neal's site as the way to sign up for games, NCGDIV was a glowing success. Now that we're a bit further up the learning curve I think NCGDV will be even better.

I'd like to hear from those who did the pizza thing too.

If you get a chance, could you ask Neal to post a Primer on the site and how to use it? As for the login, I cannot use that one. I have to find the one that logs me into my profile. Looks like I am only allowed into the back door.

I'm sure Neal would be happy to help clear up any problems folks are having with the site. He's just coming off of the Trinocon weekend so give him a few days to recuperate from that before we start cracking the whip for NCGDV. ;)

Sounds like Trinoc*Con was a lot of fun! I may decide to swap up on my attendance next year, and go there instead of an NC Gameday.

As for the Pizza Deal, I'm likening it to an RPG: The mechanics were sound, and worked well, but the flavor was kinda bland. :)

I had no problems with the meal (other than some scalawag stealing my first drink I bought), and the pizza was good, but at mealtime we kind of kept to ourselves - the RPGA people and the boad gamers kind of sat by themselves, the NC people sat to themselves, etc. As for me, I sat BY myself, because most of the crew I was used to socializing with had either left early, or were still protecting the Emorian Outpost. :) The Pizza Deal worked great for both cost and convenience, but I'm glad I attended the Errico's gathering the night previous, or I would have felt like something was missing compared to earlier gamedays.

As for Errico's, I didn't find the prices too out of line, and ended up paying about 12 bucks for a salad, a main course, and a drink. I love the atmosphere there, though I also loved the atmosphere at Rock-ola too. Each one has its charm, and both are cool with me.

One Note: My attending the Dinner Before is likely out of the question, because I will be riding with two other (maybe three other) people who are only coming in town for the day, and I'm their direction giver. When we decide firmly on the Dinner After (Pizza Deal or change of plans), then I'll bring it up to my friends and see what they say.

Tech problems & Pizza

Hey folks,

Thanks for Rel for the praise of Trinoc*coN. We did have a great time this year and broke several numbers records. Even better we saw quite a few people that we knew from NC Game Days, as well as got to spread the word about NCGDV amongst the people that had come to Trinoc*coN looking for other opportunities for more similar fun!

I've started an email thread with Belen Umeria about what his current setup is to figure out why the login script isn't working for him. In the interim, those of you with this problem, set your bookmarks for the NC Game Day site to:

http://ncgameday.dhorizon.org/login.php

This is a simpler login page that will allow you to get in without the extra scripting that is on the front page.

As for the pizza, we heard some issues last year with timing of the pizza, specifically it was going to be too late for most people to be there for. So, we would like to propose doing the pizza option at lunch time instead, getting some cheese, pepperoni and a couple of mushroom pizzas and letting people just come and buy slices from them as they're hungry/get lunch breaks. Dealing with the logistics of trying to have exactly enough pizza was a bit back-breaking, and instead we'd like to charge .50 more per slice (bringing it up to a nice round $2/slice) to allow us to buy extra pizzas to cover not knowing exactly how much is needed.

This would allow those who wanted to go out and have fun for the dinner portion to do so after their events finish up, and lessen the problems with games that let out early or run late. We would like you guys' feedback on this, as it's your game day too.

We also saw quite a bit of people getting their pizza then going back to their games, or going elsewhere instead of sitting in the open area with the others. So there wasn't really much mixing involved in the dinner portion.

Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you all again in a couple of months!

Neal
