NE vs. N (FFA): Very Young Tarterian Dragon vs. Adult Ethereal Dragon

Haha, oops. Well, perhaps my players shoud have fared a bit better when they fought those, then...

A zombified bugbear with charred, black flesh covering most of its body, lumbers into the arena with a rusty morningstar at the ready.

If it helps, I think it should be errata-ed to give owlbear's reach. They are Large and tall, so should get 10ft reach. I houserule it that way.

The zombie almost crushes the insect's head. (Rolled natural 20, natural 1 crit roll) 10 points of damage takes the praying mantis to 16 hp.

Round 230: The praying mantis slashes with its claws for 12. (Rolled 21) The claws clamp down on the zombie and pull it to the insect's mouth! (Rolled 22 vs. 11 Grp check) The praying mantis takes a big bite for another 5. (Rolled 21-4) The zombie has 25 hp left.

The zombie is still grappled, so it tries to slam and misses. (Rolled 9-4)

Round 231: The praying mantis bites again (rolled 22-4) for 7. The zombie has 18 hp left.

The zombie continues to thrash about, groaning loudly and exposing a black mouth full of jagged, blood-caked teeth.

Read: slam attack

The zombie can't slam effectively in the insect's clutches. (Rolled 11-4)

Round 232: The praying mantis clamps down harder with its claws and bites the trapped zombie. (Rolled 22 twice) The zombie takes 14 and has 4 hp left.

The zombie finally connects. (Rolled 18-4) 9 points of damage takes the praying mantis down to 7 hp.

Round 233: The praying mantis claws and bites for 18 points of damage. The zombie is destroyed!

Next up for NE in round 233: a lesser pack cranium rat swarm. (FF)

A roiling mass of darkness rolls out onto the arena floor and begins to rapidly undulate towards the enormous insect. As the blob enters fully into the light, it becomes evident that the thing is not a single creature - it is a pack of dozens of squeaking black rats, moving as one entity and scrabbling frantically towards prey. Whiplike tails and yellowed fangs snap and click as the swarm's constituents skitter over and around eachother, but the group still manages, horrifyingly, to stay in rank.

FOR THE HORDE! Swarming over to the mantis to feast upon its chitinous flesh.
