Need Help To Make/Find My Perfect D&D

Hang on, I'm confused. Are you struggling with encounter building at any level in the 3.x games or just high levels?

Can you clarify what you mean about the skills, they really don't get too high with a 6th level cap?

Not to be rude, but I thought I had made it clear I do not want to use 3.5 for various reasons. Also, and I am not trying to be flippant, but why are you trying to convince me to use it?

I have already, through this process, learned of B&T and 13th Age, so I have expanded by horizons considerably :) I have also rediscovered an appreciation for C&C, as well as seeing the Crusader's Companion and Advanced C&C.

My dislikes of 3.5 are as follows;

1] Encounter creation
2] Feat Bloat
3] Magic/Spell handling
4] Skills and skill bloat
5] Everything past lvl 6 for the most part.

That's more than enough reasons for me to look for something else. I am not trying to get someone to "show" me how I have missed out 3.5, I am trying to find an alternative that keeps the parts I do like about 3.5;

1] Racial Abilities
2] Class Abilities
3] Ascending AC
4] BAB
5] Diverse Classes
6] Limited Feats
7] Easy Multiclassing

Those things are not exclusive to 3.5, or at least require me to use 3.5 only.

The problems I listed are inherent to 3.5, and turn me off of the game considerably. So I have reached my conclusion of what I need to do, which is to either hack C&C or expanded BFRP.

Oh and the reason I like E6 is that it pulls the reins on the "super power" explosion that occurs after lvl 6 and completely changes the tenor and tone of D&D for me. Back in my 1e and 2e days, that didn't happen... hell I remember playing a 13th level Paladin in one game and while being powerful, he wasn't knocking down towers and able to destroy entire villages with a wave of his hand (yes I exaggerate for effect).

As well, I have looked at the microlite versions of d20 and they are too light for my tastes, which leads me to my conclusion that 3.5/Pathfinder is just not for me.

:)

I know nothing about Moldvay... Races as class right? Do classes actually have class abilities?
It's also been out of print for 20 years, but you might find it on eBay

it's available at DTRPG for $4.99

I am looking for a very specific thing and thus far it seems I need to use Castles & Crusades with some hacks to bring the Class abilities, Racial Abilites, Multiclassing and Feats in line with it. Hell I might even live with the Siege engine if I really had to ;)

This sounds to me like the way to go

I wasn't trying to force you into 3.x games, I just wanted to better understand why you didn't like 3.5 style games when you said you liked E6. I was just confused.

As for other games to look into, while not being D&D, Burning Wheel is a pretty good system. But when you start using all of the subsystems it can get rules heavy. Once you learn the systems the game moves pretty smoothly and bogs down less than any D&D game I have played. There is even a Burning Thac0 section on the Burning Wheel forums. Oh, the game is a die-pool system.
