Need shopping advice

Herzog

Adventurer
Next session, I will be in the position to spend approximately 5500 gp buying equipment. (I'll hear the exact amount before next session, but I'm planning ahead)

I currently posess:
- a masterwork chain shirt
- a heavy steel shield +1
- a throwing axe +1

I'm building a TWF shield-bash fighter, and I'm considering the following purchases:

1. Mithral breastplate (4200) (+1->+1000)
2. Masterwork Dwarven Waraxe (330)(+1->+1000)
3. Bashing property for my shield (+3000)
4. Enhancement for my chain shirt (+1000)

Obviously, I can't buy them all, and I won't be buying both the Mithral breastplate and the chain shirt enhancement.

(I'm currently NOT considering buying STR or DEX enhancements because their prices start at 4000.)

Possible combinations:
1. Mithral Breastplate +1 (5200) + Masterwork Dwarven Waraxe (330) = 5530
2. Mithral Breastplate (4200) + Dwarven Waraxe +1 (1330) = 5530
3. Bashing shield (3000) + Chain Shirt Enhancement (1000) + Dwarven Waraxe +1 (1330) = 5330

(NB: I CAN come up with the 30 gp extra I would need for option 1 and 2)

Any advice on which combination to pick?

The costs don't look right to me. But if they are for your game then i would go with option 3. Making stuff dead faster keeps you alive longer than a higher AC in my experience.

far as I know in 3.x the cost of magic weapon enhancements = bonus squared, times 2k. This is unlike defensive enhancements to armor and shields which cost bonus squared times 1k gold.

A +1 sword = 2kgold +masterwork price. +2 would cost 8k.
+1 armor = 1k gold + masterwork price. +2 is 4k.

Ah. thank you.

You are absolutely right.

Which changes the options somewhat of course:

1. Mithral breastplate (4200) (+1->+1000)
2. Masterwork Dwarven Waraxe (330)(+1->+2000)
3. Bashing property for my shield (+3000)
4. Enhancement for my chain shirt (+1000)

Possible combinations:
1. Mithral Breastplate +1 (5200) + Masterwork Dwarven Waraxe (330) = 5530
2. Bashing shield (3000) + Chain Shirt Enhancement (1000) + Masterwork Dwarven Waraxe (330) = 4330
3. Bashing shield (3000) + Dwarven Waraxe+1 (2330) = 5330

What would you suggest now?

Did you buy or find the throwing axe +1? Would you be willing to sell it for more cash, or are you attached to it (obviously selling it assumes you're getting that +1 waraxe as part of your purchases)?

The throwing axe was a gift, so I'm a bit hesitant to give it up (because of roleplaying reasons).
Also, I've got weapon focus(throwing axe), so I'd have to talk my DM into letting me retrain it. (and I've already talked him into letting me replace my hand axe focus/hand axe +1 into a throwing axe focus/throwing axe +1, so I'm pretty sure he won't go for it)

First of all, a heavy sheel shield is considered a one handed weapon...this means that using it with the dwarven waraxe would give you -4 on both attacks.

If you don't bash that often, you can go for it. But then again, why would you make your shield bashing?

With normal shield and 1+ Dwarven waraxe:
-1d10+1 damage and +1 on attacks
- 1d10+1 and 1d4 from the shield but with -3 and -4 to attack. (If you add spikes to the shield 1d6)

Now with a bashing shield and your +1 throwing axe:
-1d6+1 damage and +1 on attacks
-1d6+1 and 2d6 for the bashing shield (if you add spikes*), with -1 and -2 on attack

Also, are you a dwarf? Probably you are (since you go for the waraxe), so why do you care about having light armor?

I would propose:
1. Bashing property for your shield (+3000)
2. shield spikes (+10gp)
3. mtw cold iron throwing axe (+316)
4. mtw silver throwing axe (+320)
5. 5 normal throwing axe (+40gp)

for the total of 368 platinum and 6 gold pieces!

Leaving you with 1814 gp to buy beers. :cool:

Is this a dwarf character? Races of Stone has a level 1 Fighter substitution level for dwarves that trades the bonus feat for Axe Focus, which counts as weapon focus with ALL axes. You may want that if it's an option since you'll be using various types of axes.

Honestly? I'd go with a damage enchant for that shield (Flaming/Shock/Icy). d6 extra is much better than the Bashing enchant.
Are you allowed MIC gear?
