New 4E ad causing problems

Michael Morris said:
Well yeah, to keep it from spilling over I had to compress it for everybody.

Then why have it? There are already banner ads at the top and bottom of the screen that don't interfere with the experience of actually reading and browsing the site. Why add one that does? And it's only appearing in conjunction with an equivalent 4E banner ad up-top.

Huh. My reaction was completely different:

"Good thing WotC is throwing some business Morrus' way. If anyone deserves it, it's him."

PS

Guys, we fully understand that people don't *like* ads. Hell, I hate them, too. But we've gotta pay the bills!

If I had my way, I'd get rid of ads from every website, TV show and billboard; but I can't. It's a necessary evil; but we will allow Community Supporters to turn them off as soon as we get the code written.

I agree.

And Morrus, I fully understand the need for ads on a site like this. I'm not in any way asking you to ditch them.

But the banner at the top of the page would more than suffice. There's no reason to damage the browsing experience in the process.

And make no mistake, I'm not exaggerating for effect here. I find the current look of the site to be terribly distracting. To have less room for reading the actual messageboards, and 20% of the page taken up by flashing lights, is obnoxious in the extreme. Others may not find it so, but I'm actually contemplating going away until the ad does. :(

[Edit to add: The above isn't meant as an ultimatum or a threat. Just trying to make it clear how strongly I feel about this, and explaining my position.]

They must be throwing in a fair amount considering that every single page I've gone to in the last 10 minutes or so has that ad and ONLY that ad. Where'd all the other ones go? [not really a complaint, just an observation]

Unfortunately, just the top banner doesn't suffice - I wish it did!

You'll be pleased to hear this is a fairly short flight run, so it won't be there for long. But it pays for a couple months' hosting.

No worries, I get where you're coming from. Heck if I wasn't paying the bills, I'd agree! :D

All right. If it's a short run, and if it's really done that much for the site, I'll see if I can't put up with it for a while.

Thanks for at least taking the time to explain the issue, even if you can't address it to everyone's (read: my ;)) satisfaction.

The ad itself doesn't really bother me. Yes, it's a bit bright when using a black-colered style, but it isn't any more annoying than any other ad. It's the "compression" factor that feels off. I'm sure I'll get use to it. It will just take some time.

Yeah, I think that's my concern more than the ad itself. Ads are a necessary evil, sadly. Its just that the way it affects the actual forums is so much more dramatic than we've ever had before that its really jarring.

I was actually going to suggest this if there was no other recourse. Hopefully this will be implemented... soon?

As Mouse points out, it becomes a little more tolerable knowing this.
