New 4E ad causing problems

Nice. Too bad side banners cannot be restricted to non-message board pages, though. Allowing community supporters to turn off all adverts kinda lessens their value, too, doesn't it? Will WotC continue to purchase ads if they know they cannot reach the people who are most likely to spend money for something of value, like an EN World community supporter account?

Catch 22, eh? No matter what you do somebody will be upset. :)

Given that I've had Pathfinder fans email me to say they're leaving because I moved their forum UP in the forum list, I think my best strategy is to just do what works for me and hope somebody agrees. :)

Here's the thing, in terms of advertising...

If you can ignore the ads easily (like the ones at the top and bottom of the page), they aren't very useful as ads, and so aren't worth much to the advertisers. The fact that it is annoying you means that you see it - and that's good for ads.

That's only true until the ads annoy you to the point that you change your software, so you see ZERO ads. I'd call that kind of annoyance counter-productive.

The other side of the coin is: there are ads that I want to see. Often times there are new products that I might not otherwise hear about.

Why must we equate "annoying" with "good"? Not all ads are annoying.

How about this: paying members get to choose to turn off annoying ads. I have no issue with "quiet" ads, but there have been several that are just too loud and annoying to tolerate.

And before anyone asks, YES, I will volunteer my time to rate EACH AND EVERY AD as "loud" or not.

Eh. I keep my bookmarks pinned open on the left side of my monitor because too much of the web looks odd on a normal maximized widescreen window. Narrowing or getting rid of the bookmarks panel would fix the 'scrunched' nature of ENWorld with the new ad, but at the expense of screwing everything else up.
All your problems are solved by getting a widescreen monitor.

Err... no. I have a widescreen monitor. If I don't either block off a quarter of my browser window with my bookmarks (which is what I do) or use a non-maximized and roughly 4:3 browser window, then a lot of the web looks bad. Changing things just for ENWorld doesn't seem like a good idea.

Funnily enough, I have a widescreen monitor, I also have my bookmarks on the side, and EN World doesn't look scrunched up at all.

Fair warning - use NoScript with EN2 and all you'll see is a black page with nothing on it. Similarly using an ad blocking program to interfere with ad displays will cause the page to refuse to display.

You just made me into a sad panda.

I personally don't mind that ad when I'm reading a long thread or when I'm scanning through the boards. Unfortunately, once I start writing a reply or a post, that's when it starts annoying me.

Considering that WoTC must be paying you guys for that ad, could you at least ask them for several different ones? Having what essentially is the same ad on both the top and side of the page is a little well overkill.
