Merova

First Post
Hi all!

Another week, another thread. So what books did you get this time around? Here's a bit from my pull list:

1602 #4: I'm iffy on this issue. Too much quite time, but Natasha was way cool. The art was excellent as always. (4 out of 5) ;)

Aquaman #12: So what a lousy ending to a lame storyarc. Wow! It's among the worst Aquaman stories I've ever read, which is saying a lot. Oh well, at least we have a new team coming on board next issue. It can't get too much worse. (1 out of 5)

Mystic #42: Funny, crass, crazy. The bimbo with vast cosmic powers finds herself again in a land without magic and again without her powers. How will she survive this time? Much nonsense abounds in this issue, but it's still fun. (4 out of 5)

That's it for now. Still reading. :D

I love 1602. I think that the Doom in this series is much cooler and, well, villainous, than the regular Doom. This Doom seems effortlessly competent. But I am a rabid Neil Gaiman fan, so I suppose I am biased.
Anyone else catch that the servant to King James is called Banner? I expect Hulk action may ensue (unless it is a teaser, like poor powerless Peter.

Still waiting for the next Promethea....how long Mr. Moore, how long? :)

Ok, so I just bought the first three issues of this comic, 1602. Who is that American girl, Virginia Dare, supposed to be? I recognize the other characters, but not her. I guess my Marvel-fu isn't as strong as I thought.

She's Snowbird from Alpha Flight.

Thanks. I'll have to look that up.

I'm really enjoying these comics. I probably should have waited for the paperback compilation; individual comics annoy me, since they seem to be 1/3 ads, and they're too short to tell a good story. The compilations of Ultimate X-Men and the Ultimates seem about the right length to me, for instance. But these come highly recommended, so I sprung.

Tremendously entertaining. It's great fun to look at the characters and try to figure out who they are from regular Marvel mythology. The chief inquisitor was easy to figure out, for instance, but Rojhaz I didn't get. On rereading, there's a frame where the girl calls him
"Stephen"
, I guess that should have given it away, but I was reading fast the first time. So it was great fun to read along and then all of a sudden see him strike a classic pose and wing that serving tray into the air, and all of a sudden, "Aha!"

And I'm sure Gaimen enjoys taunting readers by showing little Peter Parqua in frame with a spider as many times as possible. "But I can't climb." Heh.

PS. So there's a fourth issue now? The store I was in had only 1-3. Hmm. Is this a weekly publication? Monthly? I just realized I have no idea what kind of schedules comics are published on.

In issue 4,
Peter's lack of a "spider sense" is brought home in one scene, where he gets totally surprised. C'mon, Neal, get a spider to bite the poor boy already! :)

Virginia Dare was the first child born to English parents in the new world. The state of Virginia is named after her. She was born on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Dare

Obviously, that's who she is in the real world. (Though I think both she and the state were named after the "virgin queen", Elizabeth.) I meant, who is she in the comic world of 1602? :)

That comic really makes me want to run a medieval superhero game. Good writing does that sometimes. OK, often. I wonder how Mutants and Masterminds would work for a game like this? Stone, flying-buttressed skyscrapers for the man-spider to swing between. Thor would fit right in. Hmm.

I enjoyed this issue of 1602.

Now we know where the Fantastic Four are, for instance. Doom is picking Richards' brain for inventions, and they're all imprisoned beneath his mountain. Clearly Ben Grimm is getting a little feisty, though.

This did seem like a setup issue. Next time we have Matt Murdock trying to avoid subjugation by Doom, the arrival of King James (who was quite the pederast in real life, which explains his interest in Quicksilver), Magneto's secret plan, Fury's attack on Javier's school, and more. All kinds of fun!

Okay, get your butt over to the Play by Post forums and start that bad boy up! I wanna play! :D
