New D&D movie?

If there's one request I have for a new D&D movie, it's that they get things right. Like having dragons that talk, for example. Or Beholders that do more than float.

I do recall hearing something about clerics being in the (at that point hypothetical) next movie. Which would be good, because Snails was probably the best thing about it, and a handy Raise Dead would be, well, handy. It could also go horribly wrong, of course. I don't know whether a polytheistic approach would even be considered for a mainstream film, which leads me to think they'll probably try for some mystical equivalent of the Force or something. But I could be wrong.

Oh, and I refuse to call anyone in the movie a dark elf unless their hair is silver and their skin looks like ash.

I'll go see it, I guess. Some people say that Joel Schumacher made some good movies in his time... I haven't seen them, but there's hope for anyone.

So this is just an elf who got a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY deep tan?:p

Personally, the freaky skull-mask garb the elves were wearing was just wrong.

I say we get Gary Gygax to supervise the next one. Or at least someone intimately familiar with the whole game, such as Monte Cook. Yeah, that'd be good.

Regarding the elf girl in the D&D movie, she looks like a wild elf, based on their description in the MM. I don't think she was meant to be drow.

Now, back to the subject at hand: I think that sequels to the current D&D movies should be scrapped, and the money should be used to make a good film based on the Forgotten Realms or even Dragonlance. Hire someone like R.A. Salvatore, Ed Greenwood, or Tracy Hickman to write the script, and have someone like WETA do the special effects, since we know that special effects company is capable of doing great effects on a low budget.

You mean Joel Silver?

Joel Silver has gotten his producer fingerprints on lots of well-known films and TV series. Check the link below for details:

Some good ones, some not so good ones. His most recent successes were the Matrix movies.

I read an interview with the director, Courtney Solomon. The target audience of his D&D movies is not D&D players but older children and teenagers into the fantasy genre (think Nickelodeon, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc). Otherwise, they would have done a darker, possibly R-rated version. Movie studios tend to shy away from R-rated motion pictures that don't pander shamelessly to the masses with violence and sex, because "serious" movies typically do less box office business than PG/PG-13 rated motion pictures or the aforementioned R-rated movies that pander to the masses (lowest common denominator).

I think that's a shame, but that's the belief of many moviemaking executives, and, unlike me, they've probably done the market research to determine this.

The first was terrible. The second... Well, I don't exactly have high hopes. I can't think of a single example where an utterly abysmal movie has had a decent sequel- especially when the box office take was so lackluster.

Where did you get that Joel Schumacher is directing?

Does anyone have a link to the original press release for this? The little blurb on the news page tells us virtually nothing.

You gusy are much too hard on the D&D movie

I went to see the movie with a buddy expecting a bad movie (B grade) and I got one

It was fun and no worse than most of the D&D I have played over the years

Besides Zoe McLellan (sp?) aka Marina was kind of cute
