Is it a good thing or a bad thing that his major writing gig previously was for Exalted?

A very good thing!

Exalted is a great game (unless you really hate anime, and even then you can enjoy it if you don't look at the art or the names ;) ), so having one of its creators working on 4e can only be a good thing.

No, I don't hate anime. I find most of it incomprehensible, but I do really like Avatar. Although it probably doesn't count because it's made by Americans.

And I don't know much about Exalted either. I've gotten the general impression of it as being designed for powergaming munchkins. It also has the reputation of being rather complicated. But what do I know? :\ White Wolf has never produced a game that has interested me in the least. The Exalted rulebook is beautiful looking though.

No, it's modeling a certain sort of (Japanese) fantasy story where, yes, powerful characters kick the unholy crap out of each other. It's designed to replicate that feel, and it succeeds.

For what it's worth, it's not my cup of tea, but I can hardly fault them for succeeding at a goal they very clearly set for themselves.

I think this is great.

I love Exalted. But then, I had a really great GM at the time, so it made it excellent.

However, Exalted's Charms were basically Talent Trees.
