New DM needs help getting new PCs together!

The way D&D is set up, the classes need one another. So any individuals seeking adventure will know they need company. I think adventuring parties probably get together a bit like expeditions of explorers do in our world - the expedition organiser knows someone or has heard of someone's reputation or advertises.

Wanted. Cleric to join new group of adventurers. Must provide own equipment. Treasure to be divided as a percentage. Apply at the Green Griffon inn. Ask for Robilar.

A start

To me, it depends on your campaign settings. But if you have well-thought NPCs - baddies or not - with a bit of intrigue, your PCs could be working for them/be related to them/enemies, etc.
The NPCs get them involved together. If I'm nice, they get to work together, if not there could be conflict along the way..

I think getting input from the players themselves is a good way to start building a little depth as to why the people are together. I did this in a recent campaign and for the original three, they have a pretty tight explanation of why they are together (and this even with one of them from a separate area).

"You were all orphaned as small children and sent away to be raised by the local adventurers guild- Adventure Co, also afilated with Adventure Unlimited and Adventure Inc" Im not good at coming up with names for things.
