D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

There's a brand new playtest document for the new (version/edition/update) of Dungeons of Dragons available for download! This one is an enormous 77 pages and includes classes, spells, feats, and weapons.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents updated rules on seven classes: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue. This document also presents multiple subclasses for each of those classes, new Spells, revisions to existing Spells and Spell Lists, and several revised Feats. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest document.

We still have everyone on the same recharge schedule though (long rest). Just now we have some classes they are extra equal with extra recharge options.

Even back in 2e and 3.x when strict RAW had different recharge needs it was less skewed than the long rest class vrs long rest or short rest class divergence because there were reasons to negotiate with the gm for how and when it made sense for partial or full recovery
I don't think 5e has a great recharge system for its classes, but homogenizing all of them a la 4e is even more unappealing to me. It is nakedly gamist design, and imo sacrifices nuance and flavor for mechanical efficiency.

They already are homogenized though. Everyone gets back "ALL" of their resources on a long rest but a few also get back "ALL" or a big chunk of their nova fueling resources on every short rest. Classes not part of that few might get back something on every short rest or get back a big chunk on a single short rest... But when you focus on what matters it's still "ALL" resources on a long rest unless it's an extra equal class.

The rest goes back to what I wrote earlier, we have the SR and LR and what they recharge, but I don’t think that ever got 70% when it was introduced. I don’t think that could get 70% now if they wanted to bring it in.
I wouldn't bet on any of that: the Next playtests had a higher than 70% threshold for everything, 80% if I recall correctly. And I wouldn't wager that the current system isn't working for people by and large.

As for if the length matters, they sure matter iwhen confronting a ruined castle in lost mines...... But as someone said, this isn't changing, so I guess I'll move on

It is if your marketing pushes backward compatibility as hard as WotC's has.
I do not see this affecting adventure compatibility, classes will obviously have to change more drastically than without that, but they were willing to go there, or they would not have asked in the first place, I assume

It does not really affect compatibility even when they do, just the level of being identical to the 2014 version

And having everyone on the same recharge schedule was a hallmark of 4e, and roundly rejected when 5e was designed.
having everyone on the same recharge was not rejected imo, recharge per encounter was

Oh well, unfortunately this is moot, so I will keep my eyes out for something compatible that does this ;)

I played all of 2014 with very little houserules (I'd say "none" but that would be wrong - in fact, "very little" is wrong if I remember that I make quite a few changes to monsters!)

But I'm since this playtest started, I've not only been playtesting (mix-n-matching 2014 and UAs) but I've also been testing my homebrew equipment list, and I've been shuffling profile cards and laying them out for Initiative (rather than rolling DEX).

...This is a long way of saying: I think I might just do a bit more homebrewing after giving 2024 a good clean try. 10-20 minute Short Rests are definitely in the cards!

‘Working by and large’ is not the same thing as being the preferred solution when given a choice. I expect long rests also work ‘by and large’, the same is true for having subclass progression in sync.

I would expect a proposal to change to what we have now fail, if we had started with the alternative. As it stands, the opposite is happening.

same, I am becoming more willing to stray from the official path, heck I might stray altogether

They had a lot of good ideas imo, and they abandoned pretty much all of them, what a disappointment this turned out to be
