D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

There's a brand new playtest document for the new (version/edition/update) of Dungeons of Dragons available for download! This one is an enormous 77 pages and includes classes, spells, feats, and weapons.


In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents updated rules on seven classes: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue. This document also presents multiple subclasses for each of those classes, new Spells, revisions to existing Spells and Spell Lists, and several revised Feats. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest document.

Trouble is that the rest rules aren't designed to give the group a reason to negotiate over when it makes sense in the story or why the group needs to start finding a way for one to make sense in the story pretty soon.... They are written in a way that leaves their design one where it's easy to force the 5mwd and hard for the gm to wall off with light handed reasons why it doesn't make sense in the story.

Back in 2e and 3.x however the rules were written in a way that sets a high enough bar on the 5mwd that "yea it makes sense" was the normal negotiated process. Because of they high bar the gm could make an effort at forced 5mwd a bad idea trivially enough that just the ominous indications of a rest being a bad idea was a credible enough concern for the group to rein in their own rest sgressive player.

I get not liking short rests (kindof), but…they two things are very different. Like the 5-minute rest means you have to take a break between fights rather than press on indefinitely. That’s different from even “recharges at the end of an encounter” models, much less atwill recharge.
How often do you actually have two encounters within 5 min of each other? Pretty sure that is rather rare.

I can see a difference to at-will, but that is small enough that I have no issues lumping that in as well.

I want none of this.

Normal case would be the "second wave".

Party finishes off the goons, ok lets take a breathing. Here's the pounding of a large number of footsteps. Damn the second force was alerted to us, and its on our way.


I agree its not something that happens all the time, but I think right there is the key difference between a 5 min short rest and a "auto rest fresh after an encounter". The 5 min encounter does still give the DM a chance to spice things up with a followup should they want to.

A DM can always spice things up, have reinforcements arrive before all enemies have been killed.

If we have short rests to recharge, it might as well be per encounter, then at least it does not slow things down. I much prefer not having either however

Sure, and 5 min rest concept basically gives you a "window" into the difference between one encounter and the next.

If the second wave happens within the 5 minute window its basically the same encounter. Otherwise the party takes its quick rest, resets, and goes to the next encounter.
 

Again, you're making the assumption that this is in fact an upgrade, and further that it is one worth paying $50 for. The argument could also be made that, if you are actually a new player, then it isn't an upgrade anyway, but rather your first exposure to the system, a system with a lot of fans of the game from before that "upgrade" was released.

Your entire argument falls apart the moment you stop assuming that what you think is an upgrade is shared by everyone.
No. It does not. As you said, yourself: it lies in the eye of the beholder.

Call it revision then. Or consolidation.

Don't force people to buy a 10 year old book as their first exposure.

Yes, but since when reinforcements arrive is entirely up to the DM, these two cases are not really all that different. The DM can make it one or two encounters (with a recharge in between) either way and no one would be able to tell the two apart.

Having played quite a lot of 4e, where a short rest was just “taking a breather in a moment of safety”, I can tel you that you don’t need the next fight to be within 5 minutes, you just need to be pushing on and not stopping to rest. 🤷‍♂️

Like…it is a huge difference, in practice, from experience.

ok, if the players want to avoid a short rest then yes, the two cases are different. I was looking at it from the perspective of the players wanting one.

I am cool with any short rest duration and whatever is getting recharged by it, as long as my players never take one ;)
 

I wouldn't be surprised if they make rhe dial-friendly nature of this even more clear in the next DMG, rather than buried in the dark esoteric hallways of the weird chapter near the end like theybdid in 2014.
In fact, that's probably the decision that they came to rather than changing the rule: Make it a clearly defined optional rule and see what people do with it.
