And yet another new spell that no one will probably respond to.


Holy Bolt
Evocation [Good]
Level: Clr 2, Good 2, Mys 1, Wiz/Sorc 2
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft +10ft/level)
Target: 1 or more creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes


This spell creates a bolt of holy energy that speeds from your hand to your targets.You must succeed at a ranged touch attack to hit. Each bolt deals 1d6+1 points of damage. Only evil beings and undead are damaged by this spell. You gain one bolt per 2 additional caster levels (2 at 3rd level, 3 at 5th etc), to a maximum of 5 bolts at 9th level.

Too good for a 1st-level spell (although I'm not too familiar with your Mystic offhand, if its spells progress anything like the Sor/Wiz this is too good). At low levels it's balanced with things like Magic Missile, but capping at seven missiles (which'd be at 13th, not 14th) is just very strong. Yes, it requires a ranged touch attack, but the damage is higher. And, the "evil/undead only" part is often more of a benefit than a drawback, since you can fire at a suspicious target without having to make sure it's not an innocent bystander first.

On the other hand, it might be a little weak for a 2nd-level spell. You could have it have a secondary effect (like any Good non-undead creatures struck heal 2 points of damage per bolt), and then it'd be fine. Or maybe have any target struck glow for a round (like Glitterdust, negating any invisibility or hiding).
 

Actualy, the 7 bolt cap was an idea from someone on another board. I kind of liked it so I pasted it in. Originaly it was meant to cap the same as MM.
You could probably make it a 1st level spell for clerics....especialy since WOTC seems to have decided its fine for clerics to have arcane level damage spells lol. I dont like the cleric much and just threw it on their so people wouldnt gripe. This spell is almost entirely for my Mystic...and the campaign world in my head where there is no Arcane/Divine divide and mages can use healing and alignment related spells.
 

how is this too good for 1st level? it is magic missile that affects fewer creatures and trades always hitting for a one step increase in damage. No problems in my book.

I like it! I might actually use it IMC.

But I'll change to be Bolt of Law, and it will affect Chaotic creatures instead. Otherwise, cool.
 

I think it is too weak. The die type increase in damage only makes up for it needing an attack roll. But this only affects certain things on top of that. I would make it d8 + 1 per bolt and lower its level to 1 for all classes.
 

I think I like it this way for now. Maybe some day I will actualy get to playtest it. And if it seems weak, I will increase the die type.
