New Thread Marking

I'm curious if there are any settings I can use to change how this site determines what threads are new and which ones aren't?

I know that after a certain period of inactivity the site marks everything I didn't read as read and the next time I visit only threads with messages newer than that mark will be shown as new. This seems to carry across all forums, so if I read one forum all messages on the site are marked read. The problem is that there is a lot of traffic on these boards and I may not have enough time to read all the forums I want to read in one sitting. Is there a way I can somehow set things so that the site will track new threads on a forum by forum basis instead of globally?

Thanks.

I would guess that any such functionality would be a hack into the code. On a very basic level, all the boards are doing is noting your last visited time and comparing against all new posts since that timestamp.

Now if the boards use a field in the database to do this, somebody would need to create a hack to keep that field set at a specific time. If the boards use a cookie to track that, you might be able to clear your cookies and get the same result. I kind of doubt that a cookie is used though.

The Kenzer boards seem to do it and these boards seem to keep track of what threads you've read during a session individually*, so I thought perhaps there might be a feature I could use to keep track of each forum seperately.

* For instance, when I came into this forum there was a list of unread threads. When read this thread and went back to the thread list for this forum, it was no longer a "new" thread but all the others that had been new still were.

It tracks per machine, so I always assumed it was a cookie. I switch back and forth between my desktop and laptop, and it keeps track seperately.

It is a cookie. If you log out, it clears all your cookies. If you log back in, you'll see that all threads are now "marked as read" and don't have bold titles.
