New Warlock Invocations

Winding Road

First Post
One of my players, currently playing a gnome warlock, was disappointed by the lack of support the class has gotten from supplements. I promised him I'd try to come up with some new invocations in order to give him a little more variety to choose from. Since in my experience the class tends to be a little overpowered, I decided to look for some second opinions on my attempts before allowing them as options for my player. Any feedback and/or advice would be appreciated.

Invocations

Blind the Mind’s Eye
Lesser, 4th
The dark energies that infuse a warlock are disturbing to those who would spy on him magically. The warlock gains a +2 bonus to Will saves to avoid being scryed upon. In addition, if the warlock makes his save, the scryer must make a Will save. Failure means the eldritch energies of the warlock backlash upon the scryer, dealing damage equal to the warlock’s eldritch blast.

Crawl of the Worm
Least, 3rd
This invocation grants the warlock a burrow speed equal to half of his base land speed for a period of 24 hours.

Desiccating Destruction
Greater, 5th
The warlock speaks a syllable of the Dark Speech, transmuting all of the water in a 40-ft radius around him into dust. Any creature in the area with the [Water] subtype is deal damage equal to the warlock’s eldritch blast, with a Fort save for half. Any creature in the area with the [Aquatic] subtype is deal damage equal to half of the warlock’s eldritch blast, with a Fort save for half. All other creatures are unaffected.

Eldritch Fortification
Lesser, 3rd; Blast Shape
This blast shape invocation allows you to shape a protective barrier out of your eldritch blast. A shield formed of energy appears in your hand, granting you a +2 shield bonus to your AC, and adding a 5% spell failure to any new invocations you cast while it remains. If an enemy successfully connects with a melee attack while the eldritch fortification is up, it is dispelled, dealing eldritch blast damage to the attacker. A successful ranged attack dispels the eldritch fortification without damage. The invocation lasts for 5 rounds or until dispelled, whichever comes first.

Eldritch Gaze
Greater, 5th; Blast Shape
This blast shape invocation turns your eldritch blast into a gaze attack with a range of 30 ft. The warlock glares at a target, causing them to make a Reflex save. Failure means that the target is hit by the [/I]eldritch gaze[/I]. In addition, after activating this invocation, any opponent in range who looks directly at the warlock must make a Reflex save or be hit by the invocation. If the warlock uses any blast shape invocation other than eldritch gaze, the gaze effect ends, allowing opponents to freely look at the warlock again.

Eldritch Grenade
Greater, 6th; Blast Shape
This blast shape invocation allows you to form a small bead of eldritch energy as per the delayed blast fireball spell. Like the spell, the bead can either detonate immediately or delay for up to five rounds. If delayed, the bead sits in its square until detonation. An undetonated bead can be picked up and hurled as a thrown weapon with a range increment of ten feet, but there is a 25% chance that the bead detonates upon being picked up. When detonated, the bead deals eldritch blast damage in a 20-ft radius, effecting all in its area (Reflex save for half.)

Entropic Acceleration
Lesser, 2nd
This invocation functions similarly to the spell death knell. When invoking this ability, the warlock must touch a living creature reduced to -1 or less hit points. If the creature fails a Will save, it dies. The energies pulled from the creature empower the warlock, granting him 10 temporary hit points and +1d6 to his eldritch blast. The effects last for one minute per HD of the dead creature. Multiple uses of this invocation on different targets do not stack with each other.

Forked Tongue
Least, 2nd
When the warlock uses this invocation, he chooses a language. For the next 24 hours, he is able to speak and understand the language as though he were fluent. He can not read or write in the chosen language, and the comprehension fades after a day. A warlock can not use this invocation while still under the effects of a previous invocation of the ability.

Galvanic Blast
Lesser, 4th; Eldritch Essence
This eldritch essence invocation allows you to change an eldritch blast into a galvanic blast. A galvanic blast deals electricity damage. In addition, anyone struck by the attack must make a Reflex save or be dazzled for ten minutes.

Homing Rays
Least, 2nd; Blast Shape
This blast shape invocation shapes your eldritch blast into a cascade of slender beams that arc at your target from all sides, denying it any bonuses derived from cover.

Keen Eyes
Least, 2nd
You invoke this ability to help catch details that others would miss. You gain a +6 bonus to Appraise, Decipher Script, and Search checks for a period of 24 hours.

Mystic Edge
Greater, 5th; Blast Shape
This blast shape invocation narrows your eldritch blast into a tiny but deadly ray. The critical range of the eldritch blast becomes 18-20. Mystic edge does not stack with any other effects that grant an improved critical threat range.

Planar Expulsion
Dark, 8th
The warlock rends a hole in the plane he resided on, forcing his target though to another world. The warlock targets one person within sixty feet, who must make a Will save. Failure means the target is transported to a random plane.

Prismatic Blast
Greater, 6th; Eldritch Essence
This eldritch essence invocation allows you to change an eldritch blast into a prismatic blast. A prismatic blast does not deal direct damage. Instead, roll on the table below to determine the effects of the invocation on the target.

d8 Effect
1 Red: 20 points fire damage (Reflex half)
2 Orange: 40 points acid damage (Reflex half)
3 Yellow: 80 points electricity damage (Reflex half)
4 Green: Poison (Kills; Fort partial for 1d6 Con)
5 Blue: Petrification (Fort negates)
6 Indigo: Insanity (Will negates)
7 Violet: Sent to another plane (Will negates)
8 White: Roll twice more, ignoring any ‘8’ result

Soul Sap
Lesser, 3rd; Eldritch Essence
This eldritch essence invocation allows you to change an eldritch blast into a soul sap. A soul sap does not do hit point damage. Instead, it deals 1d3 damage to the target’s Charisma. This is a mind-effecting ability.

This is definately what is missing from the Warlock. More options. Thank you!

I also think Warlocks should get a few more invocations over their level progression.

Hammerhead: Planar Expulsion was actually one I was afraid I nerfed. If it still seems like it's worth taking, that's a good sign. ;) Any particular problem with the others?

Soel: You're welcome. :D I wouldn't necessarily mind if they got more invocations. My player only seems to use two over and over, but that may be from lack of options.

I haven't seen Complete Mage yet, and I don't kow if this exists yet, but how about something like:

Eldritch Missile (Lesser, 5th, Blast Shape)
You can shape your blast into a missile-like beam, similar to a magic missile. This form of Eldritch Blast strikes unerringly, but only inflicts one half of the damage of your normal eldritch blast.

The numbers can be played with, but how 'bout it?

I like the Eldritch Missile idea, but it actually seems a little underpowered compared to magic missile, since it's not force energy and you don't get multiple missiles. You get an unlimited number, but that's not quite enough to make up for the other losses. It needs something else, I think.

I have to say that I like your ideas and think they are certainly on the right track. Tell your player to check out Complete Mage and even Dragon Magic (great book, btw) for several more invocations.

Personally, my favorite from your list was the eldritch shield. Suddenly, I had a vision of a "Green Lantern-type" warlock, constantly changing his blast into useful objects and nifty shapes (i.e. not just a John Stewart Green Lantern). There could be all sorts of interesting ideas and things that could be made down that path.

If that were the direction you went with it, I would change the Fortification entry to not allow other uses of the blast while you were using the shield, have it stay up as long as you held it, and give a better AC bonus - maybe +4. While it could still be dispelled, I'd also make it available as an immediate action - although if used this way, you could not use your blast in any other fashion on your next turn. I think that'd still be a Lesser (3rd or 4th) invocation.
