*please* let Paladin be a PrC...

This calls up a good point. We know there are 8 base classes but we also know that there will be prestige classes. Knowing that paladins are "in" doesn't mean that they are a base class. We also don't really know how Prestige Classes or multi classing will work.

What is there were four base classes:

Fighter
Cleric
Rogue
Wizard

That let you somehow combine to create the prestige classes:

Fighter + Cleric = Paladin
Fighter + rogue = barbarian
Fighter + Wizard = ranger
And so on?

Another way this could happen is if "Prestige Classes" were just skill/feat packages off of the base classes (like WoW talent trees). In other words, start as a fighter but if you take exclusively barbarian-themed abilities then you are a "barbarian" (one ability might increase you hit points; another addds rage, another some rogue-like feats etc).

Stated another way, "Barbarian" could simply be a fighter template. Ranger could be a rogue template; warlock a wizard template, etc.

This would seem to comport with their stated goals to: (1) make the base game simple; (2) define roles (3) increase player choice and (4) include as many existing classes as feasible.

At this point we have "confirmed" 8 core classes in the PHB, and we have more than 8 "confirmed" classes.

Both statements could be true. They also said there will be prestige classes. We don't know how PrC will work. But some of these classes may become PrC.

Which would be ideal, if the host of my weekly game had a wireless network. Without it, I don't have internet access in the game room. Which leaves me printing out bits and pieces, which is likely to get disorganised fast. Still, can't have everything.

I don't have wireless in my gaming room. We don't seem to get decent reception through the thick walls. So I use power lan. You pluck one into the wall near your router, another near the gaming table. Works like a charm.

Remember, though, in 4E player's start as heroes. They aren't the wet behind the ears guys getting out of fighter school, wizard school, etc.

Explain please? Are you saying that we cannot portray a 1st level character as young and experienced? That is a major shift in the game and will really affect the feel of the game.

I'm not convinced the Warlord is a 'class'. It could be a 'name' level thing. Hearkening back to early days. Another possibility is that it could be something from a game like TitanQuest where when you multiclass you get a new name. Or it could be tied to the talent trees. So if you've focused mostly on one talent tree then you get the title from that talent tree.
As for the 8 classes I think will be in?
Fighter (monk and barbarian from talent trees)
Ranger
Paladin
Cleric (Druid comes in from talent tree)
Magic User (talent trees define spontaneous or memorized)
Warlock
Rogue (assassin from a talent tree?)
(Something from B09S or Duskblade)

My prediction: 2 classes for each role.

Defender: fighter, paladin
Leader: cleric, warlord
Controller: wizard, druid
Striker: Rogue, ranger

I'll play

Defender: fighter, cleric
Leader: sorcerer, warlord
Controller: wizard, druid
Striker: Rogue, ranger

They have said enough about Sorcerers that I'd be surprised if they are not in the first cut. Somewhere they flat out said that the sorcerer and wizard are more distinct now. Though that doesn't mean that they are in the 1st PH. Though I'll be quite sad if I have to wait until 2009. :( :)
I think that the warlord killed the bard and took his stuff.
The druid has been mentioned as being equal to a cleric for healing, so I guess he is in.

We'll see.....

I´ll go with:

Defender: fighter, paladin
Leader: cleric, warlord
Controller: wizard, warlock
Striker: Rogue, ranger

And by "warlock" I mean a cross-over between the sorcerer and THE warlock from complete arcane. I bet that the warlord is the "new" barbarian as it was previously mentioned in this post.

Check out this thread.

The relevant quote:

In the saturday 4E seminar James pointed out that in the new edition, even first level D&D characters are Heroes. Right out the gate, they are head and shoulders above the local populace. This is no longer a game where your first level character can be dropped by a single hit from a peasant's club.

I'm not even sure which of these I've posted in, but is is my prediction (at the moment)

Fighter: Defender. Uses Weapon Talents to attack foes.
Paladin: Defender. Uses Weapons and Divine Blessing to further his faith.
Cleric: Leader. Uses divine magic to aid, buff, and heal allies.
Warlord: Leader. Uses Inspirational Auras to aid, buff, and heal allies.
Wizard: Controller. Uses arcane magic to destroy foes.
Warlock: Controller. Uses eldrich magics and SLA's to destroy foes.
Rogue: Striker. Uses urban skills and sneak attacks to wound foes.
Ranger: Striker. Uses wilderness skills and skirmishes to wound foes.
