Newspeak for ENWorld

Tagging it won't make it humor. Looks like an edition war thread to me.
Really? In what way? Certainly I didn't go out of my way to make all the criticism equal and balanced. I think a lot of posts around here have been extremely unfun lately (badwrongfun) because it seems you can't say "I like 4E" without some people saying you are starting an edition war. Nor can you say "I don't like 4E" without other, equally vocal people saying "You must come to see the truth of all things 4E. If you don't like it you are Doing It Wrong".

It's silly. Stop it.

It's not labeled as humor because there isn't a humor tag right now. You may not find it funny, but not everyone shares my enlightened sense of humor ;) . Perhaps I will edit in some changes if they occur to me. I like narrative elements in games, and roleplaying, and some degree of simulation and realism. I GM'd Rolemaster for years, which needless to say is rather simulationist.

They are games. Play the ones you enjoy, don't play the ones you have problems with.

The thing you don't know is that all versions of D&D have been, in this language, heavily gamist. So, knocking simulationism or narrativism is not knocking a particular edition, as no edition of D&D has been either.

Do not confuse "edition war" with "game-style war". They aren't the same thing.
Thanks for the clarification. In the future, I will be sure to only knock "gamists" rather than fans of any particular edition.

I have detected a strong tendency of ENWorlders not to be able to laugh at themselves.

-O

Actually, I'm a very gamist person, and really into 4e, and I saw this as an aforementioned thinly veiled attempt at tossing rocks at 4e haters.

For me to "laugh at myself", there would have to be something up there I'm guilty of. But, the bias of the OP covers my butt, so I end up just laughing at everyone else.

I saw it as poor form by making my "side" look bad.

Actually, I saw this post as being aimed at the zealotry on either side of the coin. The author had biases, but it seemed fair.

One thing that concerns me about the Internet in general is that people might be more likely to get closer to strangers, but they also get hypersensitive, and either only want to hang around with like-minded people, or want to demonize those that don't think like them. At its most extreme people start hating people for having other opinions, taking it personally, etc. The "long tail" or "infinite options" ends up having negatives, where people only care about their interests and don't explore other more general ideas. I also think people fear being in the minority opinion.

One thing I would suggest is to embrace a philosophy called "try to understand the other guy". I usually make sure to read all the columnists in a newspaper, for instance, regardless of their politics. I've found that while I still have my own convictions, I sometimes agree with the other columnists and they make very good points. I think that's a philosophy we need to embrace when it comes to gaming opinions as well.

I hope ENWorld can calm down in these "edition wars" problems. I wonder if there's too much sarcasm and that sets people off--then again we probably shouldn't have thin skins either.

Also, for the OP to be complete, he must address:

Emo
Video-Gamey
Anime
Also:

Grognard
Narragamulationist
Golden Wyvern
Implied Setting (Rape of)
Brench
Hongy

Edit: On second thought, that last one is probably undefinable, at least in this plane of existence.
